I have a 02 with the v10 and 430 gears, should I tow in over drive. I have always done it in the past but just want to make sure its ok to do so with my excursion. I had a manual in my super duty so it wasn't an issue. I tow at max 7500 pounds with my jeep and trailer.
I just moved from Washington state to Texas and towed a 7k+ trailer with my 2001 V10 with 4.30 gears. I left it in overdrive except through some hill country and mountains where it wanted to drop out frequently.
I agree with the above, I've towed 16,000 lbs in overdrive in the past with no issues. Unless you're hunting between gears leave it on regardless of what you're pulling.
I also tow my 7000 lb trailer in OD. When I have it in cruise control it will downshift on the least hill but I find if I control it with my foot out of cruise it doesn't shift down as much and is a much nicer tow. BTW mine is a V10 4X4 with 3.73 gears.
When I had mines with 4.30 gears I left it in OD while towing my 9K travel trailer. It seems with those gears I would be in the torque band at 65-68mph so it didn't have to downshift much unless on steeper hills. What I would do to minimize multiple downshifts would speed up slightly before a hill and allow the truck to slow down some. If left on cruise it would downshift 2 gears then upshift one so I avoided some shifts that way.
