Thinking out load!

You have a 250/350 SD,6 sp Manual trans/OD, 4WD, HD tow packages,SWB, SRW and everything else for towing and all the extras you want, etc.

Keep in mind that this truck will be used about 25% towing, 25% 4WD off road, and the rest will normal use to drive where ever.

With the V-10 & 6 sp manual trans/OD would you get the 410 gears or the 3.73 gears.

You are trying to get the best of both worlds, great towing when needed and the best gas mileage possible at ALL TIMES.

With the 5.4 & V-8, 6 sp man trans/OD would you get 410 or 3.7 gears.

Which would be YOUR CHOICE, 410 or 3.73 gears, 1 choice only, keeping in mind only the towing and best gas mileage, why?

Everything is the same, except the engine size and gear choice.

Thanks in advance,

If I was going with a gasser again I would do the V-10 w/ 4:30's, and the 6-speed,,,had them in my 04' F-350,,that was a great truck, never a problem in 27k miles, and it would really tow a trailer ! However,,this Torqe shift tranny I now have (behind the PSD),,is really something else,,stoping in tow/haul mode with a trailer is great,,,very cool the way it downshifts,,I would think a V-10 with this tranny would also be a great truck w/4:10 rears, would also get the 8' bed,, that way you get the 38 gallon tank !! I guess it depends if you want to shift or not ??

Everything I amreading says that the rear end options for the V-10 are limited to the 4.10 and the 4.3 no 3.73. Asuming the 3.73 is available, you didn't say how much weight you are planning to tow so based on probably not towing to the capacity of the truck I would go with the 3.73 for mileage and figuring with that 6 spd that you can downshift when needed. This is based on a breakpoint trailer weight of at about 9000 lbs. At or above 9000 lbs I would go with the 4.10 rear end. Now if the 3.73 isn't available I would replace the 3.73 with the 4.10 and bump up the same using my target values.

Just my .02

I have 3.73's in my 02 F250 CC 4x4 with V10 and 6 speed. I have 295 75 16 tires on it and it will still tow anything I put behind it without a problem. With a really heavy trailer I just start out in low and go. Would hate to think about gas mileage with 4.30 gears. While pulling in stop and go traffic I usually just put it in low and idle with traffic.

I vote for the 4.30 gearing. Mileage won't be that much different unloaded and better loaded.

I have 3.73 gears in my F350. I wish there was the option of 4.10 gears. I would rather have low gearing for drivability. Then there is always the option of putting on a gear splitter from gear vendors. A bit pricey though. I would also think that lower gears would be better for off road 4X4. Towing with low gears would be a bit easier on your drive train and motor.

If 25% towing and 25% offroad it would be no question, V10 with 4.10 (based on your question).

If you weren't limiting the answer to 3.73 or 4.10, then it would be V10 and 4.30. If 50% of your time is towing/offroad, then lower is better. With that much towing, I would think your overall gas mileage would end up being better with the V10 than with the V8.

we need to know how much weight you are towing, and when u say u want the best milage, is this town milage or highway? because 4.10 with a v10 aint to great on the highway. if the tow weight is low enough you could get away with the 3.73 and save some money while on the open road.
keep it ford

Well guys,
I think that the max trailer weight (from the dealers spec sheet) is from 12,000 to 13,500 lbs Gross vehicle weight rating, with a dry gross weight of 6895 to 7445 lbs.

What I am trying? to do, is get the best of both worlds, towing mileage and regular driving mileage, with the 6 sp/od I thought? that it might make a big difference in either of these situations/options, with gas at $3.50 p/gal now, who knows how much higher it will go????

I know I am trying to bale the ocean out with a tea cup, but I gota try. This is my one shot to get everything right and make the rat hole funds go as far as possible.
Thanks guys,

How many miles a year are you going to be driving unloaded? Unless you are going to be putting tons of unloaded highway miles on the truck I would go with 4.10's at a minimum and would lean towards the 4.30's. I have a V10 with 3.73's, and although I can get pretty respectable unloaded highway mileage(14-15), I am planning to regear to 4.30's as soon as can get all my ducks in a row. The V10's love the higher RPM's.

I think the small increase in fuel consumption that comes with 4.10/4.30 are more than made up with the increased performance. Besides, its expensive to regear down the road than ordering the 4.30's from the factory.
