Hey guys I've been scrolling through the site for awhile but still can't make up mind on what year/engine to get. So basically I'm getting stationed in Alaska and will be driving from Delaware with my family towing a 8.5 x 22 ft enclosed trailer weighting approx 8500 lbs. I like the prices of the V-10's and know they have good power, but they do suck in gas and a 4400 mile trip I would like to get the best mpg possible. However once we get to alaska I won't be towing that much weight, since I won't have to haul my car in it just some quads on the weekends. So what kind of suggestions do you have? Also most of the drive is flat until I get to BC and the Yukon. Thanks in advance!
Get what you want!! That is what it comes down to. I have always loved the Excursion, and said for years that I would eventually own one. About two trucks ago I had a 3/4 ton with the V-10, pulled good but I hated the poor mileage and more than that the range I could get out of a tank. Around town it seemed like I was filling up every 200 miles. 7.5 towing, 10 in town and never better than 13mpg on the highway.
I wanted a diesel (7.3) Excursion. I have never owned a diesel before, probably really don't need one, but that's what I wanted. It was hard passing over v-10's at half the cost of the 7.3. But the way i see it, I did pay a premium up front and if I ever do sale it, the resale will be higher than gas models for sure.
I keep leaning towards the 7.3 as well, but my wife keeps pointing out that I know gas engines really well and know very little about diesels. But I can always learn I tell her! I just wanted to get some ideas why people picked a certain ex. Was it they just like diesels, or about price/mpg?
Do the math on the 4400 miles for the v10 mpg/cost versus the diesel.
See how much you save and if it is worth it (probably, not)
Also, be aware the diesels need more maintenance ($$$), Diesel is higher in price.
How much driving will you do up there ? If it's low, I'd get the v10 for sure.
Reliable , cheaper to fix.
What ever you end up getting, get it early enough to test it out fully before leaving.
Once you get to northern BC and Yukon, lots of stretches with no one around and breaking down costs you, BIG.
Just had someone going thru to Fairbanks on a new diesel they bought before leaving. Broke down in Yukon, spent 4 extra days here and thousands fixing his turbo and whatever else. Bought someone's problem and paid dearly to fix it.
While it can happen to any vehicle, it just seems to be more costly for diesel fixes.
I'd go with the V10 but that's just me. It'll be cheaper to buy than a diesel, cost less in maintenance and you won't have as much starting and warming up time to do in cold weather...
V10 are gas hogs, 1st photo V10 2nd my 6.0 look at cost per mile. If your willing to learn about diesels, get one. You can always sell it and get the V10;;

You do three times more highway driving with the diesel. I'm not saying the V10 would out perform a diesel in terms of fuel economy, but cost per mile would certainly be closer if you drove them under the same circumstances.
Change the numbers by 25% then, the V10 is a lot more forgiving when used for short runs.. I use my diesel for road trips & towing. Check fuelly.com for the V10 vs Diesel mpg.

Are you actually trying to compare those two images?
Does the V10 get better or as good of fuel mileage? No. Not usually.
Are those images accurate comparisons? No. Not at all.
