I used to have a gas truck, now I have a diesel. I love my diesel!

Don't let anyone tell you one costs more than the other. Its all myth. Go test drive both and get the one you like.

I was showing the cost per mile is less with the diesel, and the V10 Never
wins the mpg challenge. Checking fuelly the diesel was 15%-25% higher in all the years; 2005 Ford Excursion MPG Reports | Fuelly

Cost per mile doesnt mean jack if one is 75% city and the other is 75% highway. I get what you were going for, but your data cannot be compared.

so from the sounds of it, it really depends on how much we will be on the highway vs city driving well for the ,most part it will be back in forth to base during the winter and then only driven on the weekends during the few summer months once a year we will probably head down to the lower 48 in it but I'm sure the v10 will be just fine I appreciate all the inputs and debates on the subject I think I will test drive both to compare, I was going to anyway, but will probably go v10 just to save money, if anywhere, in the front end. ha

I'm going to JBER were not sure where to live yet, eagle river, wasilla, or Base. if wasilla, a diesel might be better because of the 45 mile oneway commute

We love our diesel Excursion. It pulls anything we want it to and we get decent mileage for an 8000+ LB truck.

Never owned a V10 to compare but I'm happy enough that I wouldn't switch to find out the differences.

Good luck with your search and decision.

Honestly I got the diesel because of the mileage. My old gas truck made me sick watching the gas gauge just drop like a rock while pulling just the camper by itself and struggling very very hard to maintain even 60MPH up hills. I was so sick by the mileage and how much gas I was using I didn't even want to check the mileage.

Now with the 7.3 I get 14.5MPG pulling both the camper and boat at the same time and can maintain any speed I want up the same hills the gasser couldn't with just the camper.

I figured out that I save around $150 per camping trip just on fuel. Something like $400-500 a year. That buys ALLOT of oil and filters!

A few years ago I bought a slightly neglected Excursion Ltd V-10 (4.30) and took it to a shop and had them fix everything and brought up all the schedule maintenance to date. I immediately took it on the road the same day I picked it up and drove 3300 miles roundtrip through snow and ice storms, mountains and of course some sun (IL to FL). I kept it 2 years and put 10K miles of towing with it both locally and IL to FL then sold it when gas went high. I could get 16 mpg empty on the highway and towing was 7-9mpg depending on wind, speed and conditions.

Unless you really have a strong interest in diesels I would say get the V-10 and the money you save will pay for a lot of gas. Around here you can get them as low as 4K on up but the diesels are at least 3K more. If you get a diesel and it's a 6.0L make sure you do a lot of research on them and check the vehicle maintenance history very carefully.

I did buy another Excursion this time a diesel and although I can get 20 mpg on the highway empty it is definitely louder, needs warm ups and the smell is an acquired taste that my wife hasn't acquired yet. I plan on bulletproofing it and also fixing some issues but I still have a sweet spot for that V-10 Ex.

Just my 2 cents

I'll change things up here.

Man up, get a diesel, but more important if money and the relatively complicated powerstoke is an issue get the much simpler and cost effective IDI diesel in a Centurion 4 Door Bronco.
