1992 E-150. Battery not charging, new alt. Is there a voltge regulator on this van? 5.0L. could it be something else. some times runs "choppy" during damp weather. not an ignition problem. caps and wires all good. Alt does not charge the battery, runs fine when being boosted
the regulator is attached to the alternator, and therefore was replaced with it. since i assume this problem caused you to decide to replace the alternator, i think its reasonable to assume its good. so its time to check out the wiring going to it. heres a pic of the back of your alternator and you see the large output stud, it should have a direct connection to the battery, so full battery voltage. then you see the 3 pin connector there, notice the letters A S I next to its pins. wire A is battery voltage, wire S connects to the 1-pin connector next to it, and wire I will recieve voltage when the key is on.
test your wires there to see if they're all getting the proper power, and we'll help you work out what you find there.
Josh,
Thanks for the reply, the problem was with the cable to the battery, all is well now, altough I dont know what caused the cable to overheat, so it may just happen again. Spent $300 for a $3.29 problem
