Early this morning I fueled my truck near my house where I always do. I started up a slight hill and all the sudden the truck lost power, the message display read "reduced engine power" and it quit running. I pulled over and tried to restart it and it just made 1 click.
No fluids under the truck, the serpentine belt was ok, both batteries were showing green. I thought maybe the timing chain broke at first.
I called Ford Roadside service and had it towed into the Ford Dealer. At about noon I get a call from them telling me the #4 tip of the glow plug broke off inside of the engine and caused extensive damage inside the motor. They are tearing it down and getting a brand new long block for it from Ford. The dealer says 7 to 10 days.
Luckily I have a 99 Ford E350 boxvan I use as a backup unit for work. Anyone ever hear of this happening? It just had a brand new water pump and radiator replaced about 2 months ago under warranty as well.

A friend with a 2011 that transports RV's out of Elkhart, IN, had about 250,000 miles, picked up load of fuel that had a lot of water in it. Enough water that it went past the separator and caused an injector to break causing the same type of damage Vince474 is describing. Replaced the entire engine.
The funny thing is that I know the guy that used the exact same pump right after me when I fueled. He is a plumber that has a E350 with a 6.0L in it. He went right by me when I was broke down. I'll talk to him and see if he had any problems the next time I see him.
The funny thing is that the backup unit was actually up for sale due to my wife telling me that I never use it and it just sits in the driveway.
I told her the truck will be out approximately 7 to 10 days. 10 days at $60 a day for a rental pick up. $150 a day at 10 days for a rental pressure washing trailer. That's $2100 in rental equipment I just saved us.
She said I can keep the backup unit now and also said "as soon as that truck hits 100,000 miles and it's out of warranty then it's getting traded for a new truck"

Does the backup have the pressure washer mounted on the truck?
The couple engine failures that I recall were for an exhaust valve cracking issue on 2010 production trucks and some of those started as a broken glow plug diagnosis. When was your truck made?

I believe the build date was 7/2010. I know it was a Job 1 truck. I think it's a little late but the next truck I get I'll get the 200,000 mile extended warranty when I buy it, if Ford offers one.
