On my 85 f150 the brake indicator light (above speedometer) stays on all the time. Is this light just like a warning light saying my brakes are bad? When it is working like it is supposed to, does it come on when you're parking brake is set? What can I look for to get it to turn off. Just wondering, thanks.
The light is usually hooked to one of two things. I don't know if a 85 would have it but some rigs have a float switch in the master cylinder to tell you the fluid is low. But all vehicles with dual master cylinders have a slide switch between the front and rear brake lines. It slides when you lose a wheel cylinder and the fluid leaks out causing a loss of pressure in the system, or if you have a really slow leak the master cylinder will eventually lose enough fluid to activate the switch. If this is what the problem is the switch should recenter itself after you fix it and bleed the system.
There is also a chance that the switch on the parking brake assy has a problem; could be stuck, bent, out of adjustment etc. You should be able to pull the wire on the switch as a starting point. If the light then goes out you've nailed down the problem.
