Full tank of gas.
Parked on a slight incline (right to left).
42 year old gas cap gasket not sealing.
Hot sun making gasoline expand.
End result, ruined paint!

Dude bummer!! Gaahhhhhhhhhhhhh I feel so bad man, I'm sorry that happened
Put a new gas cap on with a fresh rubber gasket, and will be very careful about over-filling from now on. The rest, well some sandpaper and primer, and I'll be alright. Have not had a paint job yet so it did not ruin anything valuable, per se. Live and learn!
Cracker, That is a not knowing human error. I can give you a few tips, never fill your tank without driving 3 or more gallons out in the warmer temps, always park it drivers side high if you can.
This is an issue with behind the seat tanks, I remember my dad's 56 doing that back when I was a lad.
The cap doesn't matter a lot, heat expands the gas inside the non vented tank and if it can, out the filler it will come.

what a nightmare because of the high fuel costs here in the UK and to try & get a slightly better fuel economy I never fill more than half a tank, I'm running a 90bhp 2.5 diesel and get around 35mpg but she doesn't like hills & it's not a V! I've got a 1980 buick 231 v6 which was rebuilt a few years back & modified to 220bhp and around 290lb-ft so will overhaul that & drop that in.. will soon be starting a build thread as I'm collecting Jaguar ifs & irs, discs all round, parts for a 5-6 inch drop & easier parts availability for me.
That's one of the reasons i am going to do the mustang tank switch .
Mustang tank will do it too. The same thing happened to me with a '66 Mustang -- except no damage to the paint. Filled it up on the way to work. Later that day security called to tell me about gasoline dripping in the parking lot. They weren't happy and neither was I.
That's not good usually see a thread mentioning this atleast once a month really making me decide if using the in cab tank is a good idea or not I'm thinking of doing a mustang tank install myself and maybe just leaving the in cab tank almost empty and use it in case of emergency

The Mustang tank would be a pretty sweet upgrade, as long as it doesn't affect your ability to add gas to the truck when you have a full load of crap in the back! I kinda like to keep mine mostly stock so I am ok with the in-cab tank, just I am going to be very careful about filling it up from now on! To be honest one main reason I filled it all the way up was to see how inaccurate my gauge is! It was reading 7/8th so at least now I know that.
