I've got 4.10s and I'm running 36" Goodyear Military tires. 18 isn't too much advance is it? You haven't run into knocking and pinging and all that fun stuff?
I don't experience any starter kick-back or "dieseling" by running 18 initial....I've kept an ear out for detonation as well and haven't heard anything, but I don't tow or haul anything either, my rig is strictly a cruiser.
I haven't messed with my vacuum advance yet really, because when I hooked it up the truck popped and shut off and backfired, but I related that to the coil connector being loose and corroded. I'm not entirely sure how you dial that in yet either.
If it's a stock vacuum canister they're pre-set, usually somewhere between 10-20 degrees of advance, depending on application. (some of the older units are adjustable using a 3/16" allen wrench in the nipple).
I use a Crane adjustable canister, part #99607-1, i have it adjusted to kick in 16 degrees max, so at part-throttle cruise i may see as high as 46-50 degrees total advance.... i know, sounds like ping city, but that's what the motor wants/needs at part throttle cruise, to ignite the slower burning lean mixture.
