Okay so I put the new battery in and it tried to turn over. With some gas in the carburetor, I was able to eventually start the truck, and healthy sounding motor so far, just a little sputtery probably because of some old gas in the tank...
First off, the transmission just doesn't engage at all. I put it in drive and reverse, and rev a little and when I let off the gas, the truck lurches a TINY bit like it's trying to catch. My understanding is that this transmission used to have a huge leak last time it was run. I can't see much under the truck on account of all the weeds growing under it, but I can barely make out something drenched in black liquid, can't tell if it's transmission or not...
Also, the motor doesn't always try to turn over, sometimes when I turn the key, it doesn't do anything, just like before, lights work but it won't click, nothing. Earlier when I actually got the truck running, it only happened a few times. But later when I tried to start it again, it wouldn't turn over at all.. Starter solenoid? What and where is this starter solenoid?
2 x Gembone. Tranny low on fluid. You can put a quart, two, three in to see if it will get that truck up to where you can work on it. Don't put in to much blind though. To check the fluid level correctly the engine has to be running and the tranny fluid warm on level ground. On the starting issue, do a visual check. Check to make sure no critters messed with the wiring. Take apart all battery and ground cable connections and clean them. Carefull not to let a positive cable touch metal ground.
Well it's my father in law's truck right now, he said if they sell their house, I can take it. Seeing as how it's in the woods, I have to have a friend drag it out and tow it to my home, or pay for a tow truck. I figured If i could get it running, I could crawl it to town even if on flat tires with water for brakes.. Either way I need to know what I am going to do before the sale so I'm not scrambling when it all happens...
And I think it must be a safe bet there is no transmission flui in it... Where do I fill that?
Your welcome for my 2 cents. Tell Pops why wait 'till then? While you're working on this truck you won't be getting in trouble with his daughter! As she said in the movie "pretty woman"........work it, work it, work it. LOL!
Actually it's looking like he might give it to me sooner rather than later! I have to keep it in a storage unit for now...
What transmission fluid should I put in it? I know the motor needs to be running to check the transmission fluid, but should the motor be running when I put it in? Also, should it be in park or neutral to check/fill?
And a friend of mine said the transmission functions based off of the pressure with the transmission fluid.. How long before I can put it in gear to see if it will engage/work proper?
it's like plug & play=put in and go got it. Before moving work it through all the gears to work the pump and v- body then go for it..Once moved recheck tranny fluid..orich
