Been trying to get my ac up and running. I had planed on using R12 but I am not finding any deals at all on it. It's running $30-$40 a 12oz can. My question is, those folk who have opted for 134A hows it cool? Does it work OK?
YOUR 134 should work ok. You need to get all the old oil out of the system, and replace the dryer, expansion valve, and the oil. Leak test before opening it up and look for anywhere to fix a leak before opening it up and fix them all at the same time and open it once.
Your problem isn't going to be cooling, though. Usually in these systems that were older and for r12, they have more rubber lines, and this will leak slowly the r134, because the 12 is a larger molecule than the 134, so the 134 uses more metal lines, and the rubber lines won't hold the freon as well. It might need charged every year or so.
In the industry we've been finding that the r12 penetrates the walls of its hoses just slightly, enough to make a protective film so that 134a does not have anywhere to seep through the hoses. You will have to change to the correct o-rings though if you ever open up the system.
