I have a 400m that is in serious need of exhaust gaskets. I have $25 to spend on them. Can anyone tell me the best brand of gaskets for my engine? Part numbers would be helpful too if you have them.
I don't have any cost or part numbers but you can probably get some at auto Zone, NAPA, Advanced Auto Parts, etc., etc.
I've seen a couple of types. Some look have just the openings for the exhaust ports, others have an upper lip on them. I don't know which style to get...I think I'm supposed to get the ones with the lip on them...
I got a new set of Hedman fenderwell exit headers in a parts trade and put them on my ol red 79 mud truck. All because one of the stock manifolds was cracked in two, and the PO tried to fix it (see EPIC FAIL), lol.
Does it really make a power difference in a ol tired 351M with a edelbrock intake and Holly carb?? The headers go to a set of open stacks right behind the cab (see REALLY FRIGGING LOUD in Websters) so I do not know, but the wife loves it so I'm good with it.
Headers are prone to leak, and the cheap ones will rust a whole lot faster than stock exhaust manifolds. But there must be some benefits since a ton of people put them on.
Remember that statement about breaking exhaust manifold bolts....there are a few threads about this problem, I wrote up a detailed header install/broke bolt fix in one thread reply.

You mentioned you have headers. How do you like them compared to the stock manifolds? Are there really any big benefits of buying them?
Yeah, they make more power because they let your engine breathe better. With long tubes you may see 14%-20% increase in torque and HP depending on the rest of the setup. Shorty headers don't show the same type of improvements, maybe 40-60% of the benefits of long tubes depending on the headers.
You really see more of a difference with them if you have other mods that headers would add to. If you've already got a cam, intake, and good flowing heads, you'll really feel the difference with a pair of long tubes. If it's a stock engine they'll still make a difference, but don't set your expectations too high.
Also I know about the breaking of the bolts. Fortunately, the bolts on my manifolds are loose enough to back out pretty easily. I tried most of them the other day and I don't think they will be too hard.
