Getting ready to swap in a good 360 into my 69 F100. Both engines had those typical metallic fiber exhaust manifold gaskets, and they were all blown out.
The plan is to go with these good high quality, thick, header gaskets. Do you think that is over kill? Has anybody else had the need to do the same?

Ford did not install exhaust manifold gaskets on any of these trucks, as they never offered them. The only thing Ford installed on FE engines (except 406/427's) were stainless steel heat shields.
If the engine has composition exhaust manifold gaskets, they're prolly made by Victor or Fel-Pro.
Wow, I never knew exhaust manifold gaskets were not standard.
I want this engine to sound nice and quiet, at least under the hood.
The gaskets at the parts store are designed to eliminate header leaks. They look like they may compress slightly.
Maybe it may be a little wrench time but try it with out gaskets they'll fit tighter then with the gasket in the middle can't hurt to try. Guess depends on how true both surfaces are. Wonder why they never came with gaskets .. oh well guess it worked for them back then.
They probably worked fine when the parts were new, and freshly machined surfaces. Forty years later the manifold sealing surface is rough and rusty, that's the concern with sealing even with standard gaskets.

Within five years or so, the manifold sealing surface is rough and rusty, that's the concern with sealing even with standard gaskets.
Fixed it for you.
This is why most of the dealers back then carried Victor exhaust manifold gasket sets in stock.
Exhaust manifold gaskets weren't available from Ford, cuz Ford didn't install or offer them. Only the stainless steel heat shields (C1SZ9448E .. Left & C1SZ9448F .. Right) were installed.
Can y'all hear that in-famous tick, tick, tick? Leaking exhaust manifolds on FE engines have been a problem since the engines were first introduced in 1958.
And...many ppl confused the leaking exhaust manifolds tick tick tick with bad lifters, so they replaced the lifters. When all was said and done, the tick tick tick was still there!
Bill, is there any special preference of the Victor gaskets over the Fel-Pro gaskets? I see the Fel-Pro's listed at my usual places.
My old 352 has the ticks.....Plus the drivers side manifold has been welded in several places. The welds themselves look pretty good and holding, but I can imagine how uneven the mating surfaces must be. My truck spent 42 years on a farm in central California.....

All I know is most dealers around here carried Victor gaskets which were bought from the local parts stores...which may not have carried Fel-Pro gasket sets.
Gene;
Thanks for the link....those manifolds do look reasonably priced, and it at least sounds like they've tried to make them stronger than the originals.
But I'm confused...They only offer the drivers' side manifold for the "68-76" 390 engine, and not for the "65-67" 352 engine. Doesn't the 1967 chassis with the 352 use the same manifold as the '68 390? It visually looks the same. Is there some hidden difference?

As original:
DOTZ9430A (replaced C5TZ9430A) .. Right Exhaust Manifold.
Okay, so the heat riser is the difference. Mine has the heat riser, and it looks to be leaking too. So, I'll probably go with the aftermarket '68-'76 manifold and get rid of the heat riser entirely. Cold weather start up isn't too big a deal here in Burbank.
i have no experience with these but i have been wanting to try them, i have read good things about them on other forums. theyre called remflex exhaust gaskets and they supposedly squish when you torque them.
