Hello guys. I have a 86 f150 302 that needs rebuilt. However its my daily ride. So I bought a 94 302 to drop in it just havent done it yet. Problem is the 94 is MAF where the 86 is not. I can get my hands on everything I need for the conversion if I decide to go mass air. My question for you guys is, would it be worth it to go MAF? Also what could i do as far as getting the most power without machine work? Looking to spend 500 - 700 bucks. Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance
The 94 engine should just drop in place of the 86; just keep all the electronics of the 86, along with any different accessories such as EGR or air injection valves.
The MAF system can accommodate some amount of performance enhancement modifications, but to get anything significant, you need to replace the stock heads with something from the aftermarket. That will blow your budget pretty quickly.
Everybody seems to get confused about this MAF stuff. Bottom line is there is no such thing as a MAF motor or an SD motor in these trucks, the motors are all the same(in any given year) it's the EFI control system on the truck that is different. So that means you can take a motor from a MAF truck and put it in an SD truck with all the SD wiring and computer and it will run perfectly. So that's what I suggest you do.. remove the intake and strip ALL WIRING from the donor motor, install it where the old motor was, install the '86 intake(both upper and lower because of where the IAT sensor is located), and install the '86 distributor after you put the steel drive gear from the '94 distributor on it, and enjoy the 30 odd extra horsepower this newer motor makes.
