figuring gear ratio's

Isn't it possible to get an estimate of what gear ratio you have by looking at how many times the drive shaft turns with one revolution of the rear wheel? Getting ready to buy a v 10 and would like the 3;73 but want to be sure that I have what I want before I drive off of the lot.

Also when did they make the switch to the 3 valve?

3 valve is 2005 and up. The door sticker will tell you what the gear is, unless its been changed.

If I were you, I'd stay away from 3.73 also. I find my 4.10s not anywhere near enough on stock size wheels and tires

I have 3.73s on my F250 and it does fine for what I do - medium duty hauling and running around on the stock tires.

Yes you can figure gear ratios by turning the drive shaft, just mark the shaft and tire and count the revolutions of the drive shaft with one complete revolution of the tire. In some years of the V10 SD they only had 4.10 and 4.30 gears, if I remember right it started in 2005 but not sure for how long.

2005-2010 6.8s had the 4.10 or 4.30 options.

Worst case scenario you could find a 5.4 owner nearby that would probably be great with swapping axles / gears. FWIW I love my 4.30s.

Thanks for the feedback.

Assuming everything you read about a truck from the dealer's web site is accurate it would be a 3;73. But i've seen them post pictures of a different truck by mistake i.e. wrong color, package, etc. so who knows maybe the gears are not what is listed. When I drove the truck there was a noticable difference between 3 and 4000 rpm and would like to see the power a little earlier. Maybe my old 7.3 has me spoiled, haven't drove a hd truck with gas motor in years. In either event I plan on getting a tune from Mike at 5 star. Any of you have one?
