similar thing happened to me in my 49 f1. going to an evening meeting. big thud and horrible vibration in the engine. stopped near a street light and saw the blade missing. no leak. unhooked the belt which only runs fan to crank and went on my way. later found the blade had jammed itself up between the radiator and shround without creating a leak in the radiator. same issue, i was the lucky one. like others have said, we were both lucky no one got hurt.
Ralph Nader got his start at one of the Big 3 and his first zinger was warning them that fan blades could fail from flexing at the point where the blade joins the hub, or at the rivet holes. No one listened, that started him on his crusades. It's a fatigue failure and not at all uncommon on cars this old. Another reason to run a shroud!
I think I would have needed to go change my shorts
Maybe some day you'll find a reason to change them, hopefully before Truckfest.
I can remember my dad nagging me not to stand in line of the fan when we were working on a car just for that reason. I do the same with my kids. I remember some one posting here a while back about the blade letting loose and impaling the hood, better a hood than a head.
This happened to a friend of mine on a trip last Fall. Blade broke and put a hole in the radiator and that was the end of that trip until he could get the radiator repaired. I don't think it is all that uncommon with the A's.
The new bots I order came in Friday. I will be puting it back together this week.

I had a fan let go back in 1975,I was driving a 73 ford Louisville,on an interstate at about 65 mph.Blade took out the upper hose, chunk of battery and out thought the fiberglass hood.Vibration was unreal. So it is not only old fans that break.
Wow that could have been deadly, glad you wernt injured. I dont know anything about metalargy but I think I herd somwhere that even ships have a life expectancy of something like 35 years, as far as metal fatigue goes. I dont know if that pertaind to old rivets or the plate itself. I know we are fortunate to have several members that are very knowlagable when it comes to this stuff. By the way , that is a beautiful aa you have there.
