Hi..Im new to this site and would like to know some info on 1988 ford rangers.I am interesed in buying one,but the person who owns it says it is a carburated engine. Are 1988 Rangers carbs or inj? Also how are these trucks on fuel?He says it is very easy on fuel.Im asking this question ,because the truck is a long distance from me ,and I would like to know if it would be worth seeing. Its a 1988 Ranger 1/4 ton, short box 2wheel drive,4 cyl,5 speed.Could this have a carb engine dumped in it to sell it?What are these truck like on fuel, ride, motors etc.Sorry for all the questions ,but am interested in a Ranger, but dont want to get ripped off. Thanks again.
I'm reasonably certain the 2.0 (saw the 2.0 in a forum, but I don't remember if Rangers were ever actually equipped with a 2.0) and 2.3 were carbureted. From what I could find, the '89 got the fuel injected 2.3.
I think there's a VIN decoder somewhere on this site - if you can get the VIN you can run it through the decoder to check.
Hope this helps.
On edit -
IMHO, unless the guy is practically giving the truck away, I wouldn't waste my time travelling a great distance to pick up one that old. Rob is right - with all of the cheap '91 and newer ones out there, you'd be far better off for only a couple bucks more
Thanks..I live in Canada and was wondering if $1300 would be too much to pay for this truck? And would it be easy on fuel? Thanks for all the infomation.Glen.
1,300$ Canadian would be okay, depending on mileage and overall condition. I think $1,300 US would be kinda high, especially since the used car market has been in the tank the past few months. Also, you have to factor in how much it will cost you to travel to the seller and back.
I would imagine you should get somewhere in the 25mpg range. The newer FI ones would probably be a bit more economical.
Thanks again..,this forum is great for people like me that know very little about trucks. My truck i was driving, was a Toyota, which im selling, for its worn out and needs a sensor.Just thought I go for a carb engine.I have limited income so I thought the Ranger would be a better truck"no EFI".This truck needs work done on the box"side panels",the rest of the box is good.I was just wondering, with my limited income,if this would be a good buy..guess Ill think about it a while.thanks again for all you help on this matter...Glen.
I really think you're better off with EFI nowadays. It is a lot more reliable than in the old days, and you'd be surprised how much you can diagnose and repair yourself with a good shop manual. Plus they're more fuel efficient than their carbureted cousins.
For around $1,500 US, you should be able to find yourself a pretty nice basic 2WD truck in the early 90's, with a clean body and plenty of service life left. Believe me, I know - I have teenagers Just be patient, and don't be afraid to say "I'll keep checking". You'd be surprised how many sellers will reconsider a fair-but-low offer after a couple of weeks.
Thanks again!I was looking at one tonite,1990?,4x4,cab plus, dont know the engine size, for the person wasn't around at the time.I had a look under the truck and the frame seemed a little scaley on the drivers side.I didn't see any holes in the floor,or anything that looked really bad,it was newly inspected, said it had new engine, had body work done,a new fender good rubber, the box was sitting uneven a bit,and he wanted $1800 OBO for it .Kind of got me thinking again. The fuel milage for this wouldn't be that great would it?I guess im a little too anxious.glen
Well, 4X4 is going to be higher maintenance, but nice when the weather is nasty. If I was going to buy one purely based on economy and within a tight budget, I think I'd stay with a 2 wheel drive. The extended cab is nice for stowing extra gear or hauling a passenger around (providing they're not too big ).
I have a V-6 in my '93 4X4 and I consistantly get 18 - 20 mpg.
