sigh.... code is back 4.0 who the heck designs an engine that you have to remove the intake manifold to get to the ect, and then makes a leaky plastic container to house the thermostat. GRRR
Which one is the ect and I think the other one is a switch, what is the switch for? no electric fan.
still throwing the code I swapped the sensor out on the passenger side, as thats the only one I can get too without taking everything apart. It appears this code keeps the air conditioning from turning on, coolant guage works.

The one-wire temp. sensor is usually the "sending switch" used by the instrument panel temp. gauge. The two-wire sensor is usually the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor that is used by the PCM for a variety of functions. (I have to assume it's the same way on your '03).
It's possible that a faulty ECT signal is causing the PCM to keep the A/C compressor from engaging.
The Ford Manual says code P0117 can be caused by the following:
So you need to find the two-wire ECT sensor and replace it. If that doesn't do the trick, then you need to look closer at the ECT harness connector and wiring.
Thanks rockledge, that would be the new motocraft one that you have to either remove the intake or unbolt the engine accessory bracket and remove the whole thermostat houseing to get too. no more 4.0s for me in the future.
