Radiator repair or replace??

190K miles on the clock and the top tank seal on the radiator gave up the ghost. Is it possible to repair or just time to buy a new one and would repair cost (no clue here) be cost prohibitive vs. a new radiator at $240 plus shipping.

Is it leaking along the joint where the aluminum body meets the plastic top (or bottom) chamber? I don't see any way to fix a leak at that location... lousy design if you ask me.

It's leaking where the top meets the aluminum core. I'm not sure that it's repairable at that location so that's why I'm asking for opinions. I'm probably just going to go with a new radiator but I didn't want to do it just before doing a major overhaul either. If it's repairable for a relatively cheap price and it's reliable then I'll have it fixed. If I'm just pissing my money away then I'll go new.

Anthony is probably the right guy to jump in for ya Tim, but I would think it all depended on who did the repair and what all was done. At a minimum, I would probably replace the plastic tanks since plastic will get more brittle from age and temperature exposure. That may make it almost as expensive as a new radiator.

These guys seem to advertise that a repair can be done (depending on the specific radiator - ie case-by-case):

Edit -

These guys seem to have a decent inventory of various plastic tabks:

You're probably right about the caps and by the time it's all said and done I can have a new one with a guarantee for a bit more.

Hey Tim, For my money and peace of mind I'd get a new all aluminum radiator. Don't want a repaired plastic radiator on my mind when towing the 5er thru the Eastern Sierras. JMHO.

Not a bad idea however it's probably way out of my budget Mike. $240 from Tousley is cheap for an OEM that I've absolutely put through hell and never had a problem with. It's been through 5 sets of headgaskets--LOL. Got a link?

How much shipping cost? Is this OEM Radiator? Get it.

All my other vehicles when the plastic cover crack, the radiator shop either told me that they can't fix it and the cost of cleaning and pressure test of the old radiator is kind off high also.

It is OEM and I did order it from Tousley along with a list of other stuff for my overhaul WAY cheaper than driving across town to the dealership here and buying it.

And you call yourself partsman! I thought you would get the lowest price on parts being a partsman and all

I'm still waiting for the order to process through to get the completed invoice. Regardless, it's still WAY cheaper than having to pay MSRP+ from the local guy PLUS having to take off work and drive across town to get it. $75 cheaper at least.

Hot tunes and stock head bolts for the first 3. Bent rod and bad heads for the last two. Lets just say I did a LOT of beta testing in the early 6.0 days for several folks. This set has been on for 5 years though and been down the track quite a few times, so I'm not complaining.

Unfortunately I'm not fast at changing them. This time I'm trying to build a motor but it's going really slow. There was a lot more to do in the block than was realized until I completely tore it down and gathering funds has been slow.
