From this description, my head is building something I wouldn't use. Is it possible to sketch out a diagram (no need for tube size, just components and how they're connected) and share it here? I saw the words "return pumps" and completely freaked out... but I'm sure I'm getting it wrong.

Expanding the topic: So I was talking to Tugly about whether or not I could hook up fittings from the fuel plugs in the back of the heads (there are square drive fuel plugs on the back of the heads right?) to a "T" fitting with the leg of the "T" going to a pressure regulator to a 5/16" return line to the fuel tank as a way to solve the fuel deadhead/non-return issue. If I did this, I also assume that I would be installing the fuel pressure gauge sensor prior to the pressure regulator on the leg of the "T" before it joins the 5/16" return line.

I kinda threw him for a loop.

I do know that I don't know what I am doing. So, I am just thinking out loud here, and any thoughts would be appreciated.

But here's my deal, vans have great access to the back of the engine and it is only a short distance to the tank from there and I am building my own stainless steel replacement tank anyway so I can put a fuel port on the top front of the tank for the return line (to address one of the Hutch mod fixes by separating the return line from the intake line). And wouldn't my "T" fitting concept allow the unused fuel to flow out the back of the heads back to the tank and wouldn't that be better than the stock setup which has only the fuel bowl fuel return to the tank?

What say you all?

And yes, 1979Beast I too would like you to post your fuel line setup in this thread so I can see if it bears any relation to what I am contemplating? "Go Advanced." Click on "Manage Attachments." I know you can attach these file extensions: .doc, .gif, .jpe, .jpeg, .jpg, .pdf, .png, .psd, .txt, .xls, and .xlsx

Maybe you can draw it in Word and attach it as a .doc file? Or draw it by hand and then photograph it and attach it as .jpeg?

Tim, the only drawback that comes to mind is this: by returning fuel from the head like you mentioned, to the tank, it will be filtered fuel. Not that it's a bad thing, but from what I understand, the return from the bowl is returning unfiltered fuel back to the tank. That means a lot more flow through the filter.

Is that a bad thing, necessarily? I'm not sure to be honest.

Next question: instead of a regulator, why not just a restricted orifice? It only has to be large enough to allow air to escape, and the smaller the Better to keep the pressure where you want it (set by a regulator on the return line from the bowl).

jeffreyt: You know I wasn't going to disconnect the return line at the bowl. But maybe I would have to, to keep fuel pressure up at the injectors?

"Why not just a restricted orifice?" -- indeed. I thought about that too and, I think you are right, simpler is better.

But is there even any benefit to doing this? Does it provide even the benefit that the FRX does? The concept of crossing anything over the top of the engine in a van scares the crap out of me. I can just imagine the tunnel rubbing on the fuel lines in a cross-over. Maybe they would fit (I have never actually seen an FRX installed) but there really is very little room for anything more on top of the engine given the little clearance with the van engine tunnel.

It would seem that if I experiment with such a set up, having fuel pressure gauge(s) installed (and where to install them?) would be critical.

Thanks for your reply. Happy you are moving to Texas, it is one of my favorite former nations. All California businesses are moving there or across the border into Nevada.

1979Beast: I wonder if your set up is anything like I imagine. I am very curious to see your drawings.

I looked this over and this is a very sound design. Yes, it does send filtered fuel back to the tank, but any post-head return line would... like the FRx.

Here is the stock configuration, and the FRx takes fuel from the dead end of the heads (points 1 and 2) and regulates it to the return line... not unlike 1979BEAST's diagram above.
