Hello team,
My truck is acting up. Last night when I was parallel parking I noticed the RPM was jumping, I then noticed the OverDrive switch was blinking. I turned off and turned it back on and the issue went away. This morning on my way to work, it did exactly the same and it automatically corrected itself. The overDrive ON/OFF light keeps blinking.
Any thoughts?
My truck.
7.3 Diesel, Auto trans, 86 K Miles, Super Chip.
The blinking light means that the computer has sensed an issue with the transmission. You may be able to pull codes on it.
I have heard of a bad torque converter with the RPMs jumping like that.
Sounds like you may need a trip to a transmission rebuilder to get some solid advice. The flashing light is just a "hey something isnt right somewhere in the transmission".
The ONLY way to know is to have the codes read. When the light flashed one or more codes was stored in memory. The code will stay there even if the light isn't flashing any longer. Auto parts stores that read codes free CANNOT read these codes. It takes a fairly high end Ford specific scan tool. Most independent shops and all Ford dealers can read these codes.

I *LOVE* that! The sensor. Any particular one?
The Superchip tuner also reads the codes....I will give that a try.
That code means your tuner can't read Ford transmission codes. You may have deleted the code you need, so if the light doesn't flash again you may not be able to get the code at all.
Before you go tearing into a lot of work. Check your batteries, my 5.4 had the battery crap out all at once and my gauges freaked out. The tach was jumping the speedo jumped when stopped and my o/d light was flashing.

Actually you are very right, someone suggested alternator issue as well on google. I know my truck very well and I have never pulled more than 4000 Lbs trailer, no burn out, no 0-60 time etc. The Max load I put on the bed is my Yamaha Rhino( 1575 Lbs) and some gears(Max of 2000Lbs total). I find it hard to believe I'm having Torque/Trans issues. Lets wait and see...
ok, the shop says P0720 error code. Where is it located(speed sensor) and how easy is it to replace it? do I need to bring down the trans? how much does it cost?
That means the output speed sensor isn't being seen by the PCM. It might be the sensor, or it could be the wiring between the computer and the sensor. It doesn't automatically mean replace the sensor.
A new sensor should be about $20. It is located on top of the trans, near the rear of the trans. There is one bolt holding it in and one two wire electrical connector. You should be able to change it without lowering the trans.

Glad to hear that your issue is likely minor, but remember that transmissions don't need to be worked hard or neglected for them to fail. The idea of an alternator issue causing a trans fault seems far-fetched at best.
Let us know how it goes, it sounds to me like you got lucky!
