Timing question

Please forgive my ignorance brothers, but should my timing advance change when I hook my vacuum line back up. I've had it two ways and need clarification. When I time it at 6 degrees with the idle screw backed out a bit, the timing stayed the same when the vacuum line was hooked back. There also seemed to be a faint knock to the engine. With the idle stop screw in all the way, and no knock what so ever, the timing runs up to about 12-14 when the vacuum line is hooked up. Which way is right?

I thank you all for any knowledge you can give this uneducated newbie.

yes it should advance when your rpm goes up, and 12 to 14 degrees sounds about right. just confused about the idle screw.... are you talking about the fuel-air mixture screw on the base plate of the carb? or the idle screw on the carb linkage?

I meant the idle stop screw on the throttle linkage. I believe the air/fuel mix screw is good, but in my lack of confident knowledge I have been struggling getting everything set just right. Too rich/too lean... How to tell? I think it's good now
