i have installed an aftermarket hei distr. all has been well until my intake gasket started leaking. had it repaired and when i got the truck back, it sounded like a diesel. its a 400m 1978. the man said it sounded like i spun a bearing? i did discover that my timing is at 12 degrees at idle with the vacuum advance unplugged. plugged in its at 32 degrees? that sounds way too high at idle? what should my timing be while at idle with vacuum advance hooked up?
Idle is to fast or vac line hooked up wrong. At a idle you should have no vac. Check idle speed and the vac line should plug into carb, generally there should be a port under the throttle plates, that is where dist line gets hooke. With the line plugged, where is timing as you rev up 3-3500 rpm? You may have enough advance with aftermarket. Vac advance does help in power an fuel economy. Not sure which way you looking
Actually if everything is hooked up correctly thru the thermostatic vacuum switch a cold engine will have full manifold vacuum to the distributor and ported vacuum when it warms up.
