Blue Spring Install

Can I change the spring without removing the fuel and fuel filter. The reason I ask is it is going to be nice out today and I am still waiting for my fuel filters. (ordered them online to save a few $$'s)

Yes, just put a rag under the bowl to catch spillage.

Won't it drain the whole filter bowl? That's more than a rags worth...

If you are that close to changing fuel filters anyway, why not wait? Your engine filter will drain down to the HFCM when you do that filter If I remember right.

The kit I got had a new o-ring for the fuel filter and I'm several thousand miles from a change so I just got a brand new gallon zip lock, took the cap off, swapped o-rings, put the filter in the bag and sealed it then suctioned the fuel out. And you still need a rag under it as you'll get a bit more when you loosen the cover.

There isn't that much fuel in the bowl... All I've used is an old t-shirt or towel to soak it up.

I just installed mine last night. After pulling the filter I used a turkey baster and large plastic cup to empty the fuel bowl. There was easily half a cup in there, 4 or 5 ounces I would guess. Even though I did have a rag beneath the spring cover, that would have been pretty messy to let escape. I made sure the baster and the cup were clean before I started, afterwards just dumped it right back in the bowl. Found out I needed a new fuel filter cap. The last time it was changed was at a shop and they overtightened it, cracking the socket hole. Putting torque on a ratchet extension just caused the cap to separate at the crack. Needed a box end wrench to hold the plastic together to get the cap off. Now I need a new cap ordered before I do my next filter change. Damn monkeys!

REAL MEN use a 24mm socket and ratchet. That little square hole is just there to sell more filter bowl caps.

I did mine and used a old racers trick draining carb bowls. I took reg cover off and caught fuel in a cap off spray can (paint, carb cleaner, etc...). Most fuel doesn't come out till you remove the plunger with spring on it. Took me all of 30mins!

S3624, Socket, Filter Flip, 24 and 36mm, 3/8" square drive

Doubles as the 36mm for the oil filter and primary fuel filter. You get bonus points for specialty tool bling factor.

Any points for a shinny crescent wrench?

Negatory. You still need a 36mm for the primary fuel filter on the frame rail

Looked all over for the 24mm, except HF. Have the 36mm and the one for the tranny exterior filter. Don't trust a crescent or the ratchet for the under hood filter. All I could see was a busted cap. I can turn a fifty $$ job into 100 bucks quickly. Thanks for the help.
