Painted horn button

Has anyone tried to repaint the horn button on their 53-56? Trying to figure out the best way to cover up the embossed part in the center to be able to spray paint it.

I have no experience with this yet since I'm not this far along, but I wouldn't recommend spray paint, would get overspray all over if not covered properly.

My plans are to put masking tape over the center, then trace the painted portion cutting it out with a razor blade, then paint with a brush, and remove tape. If you trust yourself enough you can skip the masking step I'm sure. Just make sure the surface is prepped well to avoid issues later.

Coat embossed part with Vaseline, then spray emblem. When the paint dries, wipe off the Vaseline.

I have found that it works best for me to spray paint whatever it is, let it cure for several days then buff the overspray off with a cloth stretched over a piece of soft wood and polishing compound. It polishes the paint from the high spots, leaving the lows alone.

Here's what I came up with on mine. I have the button with the red paint on it. It had some real dark spots on it that wouldn't come off. I tried paint thinner and everything else I could find and nothing worked. I then tried buffing compound on a q-tip, that took all the dark spots off and the paint looks good as new. I'm really happy with it and won't need to paint it.

I have used a quality masking tape in various widths to avoid cutting and really good results. I used spray paint and made sure to hold the can further away than I normally would to assure very thin coats (3-4) opposed to letting the paint build up too quickly in those small areas. I have also used the paint all and sand off the high spots method which also works well. My experience with the vaseling is I have not been able to get it applied without falling short of the paint line or going over it. If you go short of it, sanding off the high is still an option. If you go over it, you have an area of the part you want painted that wipes off. A little more tricky. On another note, has anyone had any luck finding the plastic base for the horn buttons? Lots of sources for the replacement horn buttons that include the base, but as of yet, no source to get just the plastic base. $40-$55 for a replacement horn button that only needs the plastic base is a little steep.
