What type of paint should I use for the removable top? I want to keep the texture but have a few small scratches needing repair. Color is black if that makes a difference.
Paint it like you would any fibreglas object. See a paint supply store for details.
I don't think a primer is necessary unless it's been without any paint for a long time.
Flat paint is the ticket.
When I painted my 95 I had problems with the top.
The paint store told me to use either "Thinner or Reducer" to clean the top.
1. No need to sand. Just clean really good.
2. Apply Primer Sealer (seals the old paint and acts as an adhesive for the new paint)
3. Apply the Flat Base coat (about 1 quart)
It looked great until.....
I took it to the carwash (a few months later) and the areas below the side windows started to flake off (only a little). I guess I didn't clean those areas correctly.
My top has been painted with gloss black paint. Still has all of the texture and looks great. I wash mine with my power washer and have not had a single complaint yet.
I work at an R.V. dealership that has a bodyshop that paints fiberglass everyday, and as long as you prep it and make sure it is clean we then spray using regular auto paint.
My .02 cents worth.
