Hey guys, I have a 1999 built in 02/99, 7.3l, 83000 orig miles, 2wd, A/T and A very reputible shop told me my torque converter is making alittle noise. It isnt horrible, barley noticable, I dont race it only floor it every so often and dont tow at all. My question is do I have anything to worry about? How much life you guys think is left in it, because it is a big job. Just trying to get some outside advice. Thanks in advance.

I have a 99 Feb build date that made a horrible nois ever since the day I bought it with 113k on the clock. I fully expected to have to put a transmission in. In Feb with 248k and still making same sound I got nervous and set up date with BTS. A lot of those mile were pulling a trailer. I never had an issue just the loud grinding noise. I sure do like my new BTS transmission. Bottom line is if the only symptoms you have is the rattle and you can live with it I would just drive it.

Marbles in a tin can! 99's are known for it. For three years I lived with mine as it got louder and louder, to the point you could not even talk next to the truck. I took it to three different transmission shops and they all told me "that's just the way it sounds". Finially on this forum I found the answer, the Torque Converter! I also replaced the flex plate which can have it's own issues. The results, quiet! quiet! quiet! Bottom line is, I think you can live with it as long as you can live with it....

I also have a L 99 which had a case of marbles. Noise was bad but you also have to think of all the metal filings created by the noise. I have never heard of any case where there was metal grinding and no by product of steel shavings.
I had the TC changed and trans flushed, new screen, new fluid.
Very quiet now, and knowing the trans is clean of all TC debris.
