Differential fluid

Does anybody know which brand of fluid Ford used in the sterling and Dana differentials? I am getting ready to change mine at 174,000 miles. I know they say lifetime but I would like to change them out.

-Don't know the brand that Ford used originally.

-I would just use a quality full snythetic in whatever weight your axle requires, and may be a 4oz bottle of FORD friction modifier as well.

I changed the rear differential fluid on HERS years ago with AMSOIL, and when I was driving home, I thought something was wrong. Then I realized that for the first time since I had owned the truck, the limited slip rear was ACTUALLY WORKING. So I recommend getting the Amsoil rear differential fluid, and you DO need to put in a friction modifier as already stated.

In addition, I HIGHLY recommend using this stuff to seal your rear differential cover rather than "normal" RTV:

Gasket Makers : Permatex® the Right Stuff® Gasket Maker

It's about $20 for a can, but let me tell you, I've used it for so many other things it's ridiculous (one can lasts a long time). Need to make a custom gasket? It will do it. I love this stuff.

I agree... The Right Stuff works wonders and was the only thing I could actually get to seal my differential cover.

To the OP... Just use any full synthetic 75W-140 and the friction modifier if LS.

I will agree with both Supercab and Justin. ANY SYNTHETIC will do great, it doesn't have to be the brand I suggested (I don't sell it...just have used it over the years). Mobil 1, Castrol may make a full synth, Royal Purple, Amsoil, Schaeffers, Redline, etc. Does Lucas have a synth? Heck, Wally-World may have the Mobil 1 synth so I'd get whatever is most readily available.

I used RP and didn't have to add the friction modifier, it already has it in it and mine is a LS.
