a/c flush

I need to flush the a/c system. The condensor and evaporator. How does everyone do it? Autozone has a kit you can rent for $40 but I think you have to buy the flush stuff. Is there a way a shade tree mechanic can do this at home?

You need a fully evaporating solvent that won't leave a residue to flush AC parts. You also need access to LOTS of compressed air, something along the lines of 15cfm or more. (5hp, 2 stage, 60-80 gallon compressor) The system needs to be DRY when you're finished.

The solvents that I've seen at the parts stores lately are citrus based and leave lots of residue. I can't say that they don't work, but I don't trust the residue they leave behind. It's made to break down the old oil so the residue would also break down the new oil.
I use a product called Dura-II which is specifically made for AC systems. I've also used laquer thinner or isopropyl alcohol as needs dictated.

As far as flushing the condenser;
-If you are just flushing to remove the old oil, you should be fine.
-If you have had a compressor failure, REPLACE the condenser. It cannot be reliably flushed even with professional equipment.

Hope this helps.
