I just got done doing something similar to my '92 Explorer.

I believe the proper oil amount for the system is 8oz... I'd check into that though. I think the proper oil to use with R134a is Ester 100 oil, unless it says something on your compressor about oil! If you're going to have the system apart, you should probably get the kind in the pour bottles instead of cans so you can pour some into the components before you assemble them, so the system doesn't start dry.

That looks like most of the system, so everything should come clean, so you wont have to worry about flushing much. Even so, I'd find some way to plug the parts until they're in place and you're ready to make the connections. Keeps dirt from getting in that way. If you do have to flush something, I prefer to use brake cleaner, as it leaves no residue. Spray a good amount down the part, then use compressed air to blow it dry.

You also need new R134a compatible o-rings.

Once it's all together, pull a vacuum. If you dont have a vacuum pump a shop can do this for you. This is an essential do not pass go kind of thing. You need to get all the moisture and air out of it.

Then you can charge it up. There are two ways to do this:
1. Figure about 80% of the R12 charge, or
2. Charge until the compressor doesn't cycle at highway speed.

After that, enjoy!

Hey Black Ford XLT,
not meaning to hijack your thread, but I have a 1980 F-150 that needs an a/c system overhaul. I can find the main parts (compressor, evap etc) but I'm playing he77 trying to find replacement hoses for my truck. Did you get them from a local place or from one of the chain stores?

Thanks,
Dave S

Try http://www.aircondition.com/ or http://www.ackits.com/ as two places that have hoses. If they don't have OEM, you can probably get new 134a compatible hose material and crimp-on fittings and make up your own, given you can find a local shop to do the crimping after you cut & fit. I found a parts house that crimped mine.
Check with http://www.autoacforum.com/ for professionals to answer ?s.

hoses

David, try advance auto parts or LMC truck 1-800-lmc truck. I ordered a few hoses from lmc but warning itll be the same hoses u get from advance if it doesnt say oem.Their catalogs are the best for any 96 and older they have parts i didnt even know what u called, in exploded view. They books are helpfull and are for 66-96 ford trucks , catalog is free , even has all hoses listed name etc . ADVANCE AUTO now has a good listing and u can use them as a price check.Lmc other wise has them but it may be the same hoses (manu) as advance has listed . Lmc has alot of oem parts just look at their prices whew oem = bux Good luck TR
