Okay, guys, maybe I can help? In my hand is the wiring harness from a 1986 F150 with 4.9L [feed back]. Looking at Bill's [85lebaront2] photo with the drawn in location of the wiring for the 4.9L, I can confirm that he is correct.
The connector which michaelwenrich obtained [PIC1] is the same as the one I have EXCEPT that it has what appears to be a white colored wire where mine has a brown(tan?) wire with a red stripe.
The white/red wires seem to turn to a light tan/red after exposure to underhood heat, liquids etc. The white/red is the test initiator lead and is by itself in the small plug.
Update - I got the wiring rewired to the self test connector and it actually worked! Cant thank everyone for their input. Now since my truck codes came back clean, I'm assuming my truck sputter/skip in 4th gear is maybe the carb? Not sure if its ever been replaced or rebuilt so I'll give that a try next.
