just tried to smog my f150 today but it didn't pass. actually all the emissions passed but it had a few fault codes. i didn't know the red light was on 'cause the whole dash panel, besides the speedo, doesn't work.
i'm fairly handy when it comes to cars. i can work on them for the most part. i figure from the codes i need a new O2 sensor? not sure about the cylinders misfiring though. the truck runs great. i changed out the plugs and wires when i bought it and it runs awesome. did the wires one at a time and put them back in the correct spot...unless the person before me hooked them up wrong.
any ideas on the dead control panel? only thing that works is the speedo.
Check the heater line on that o2 sensor for voltage and if its there then replace the sensor. Hopefully it will clear the misfires. Autozone will read and clear your codes for free btw, as well as sell you the new o2 sensor. Clear the codes after installing the new o2 and see if they come back.
i rented the code reader from autozone and cleared all the codes. i did not replace the 02 sensor. all the codes deleted. i ran the engine to normal operating temp and still no codes.
my gf goes to smog it again today and the smog dude says the 02 code is still there. what's up with that? the reader didn't read any code. he said his machine is way better and can get more detailed. i believe that. but shouldn't a code be picked up when it's faulty regardless?
also, he said it would take approx. 200 miles for all the codes to be FINALLY deleted from the truck.......said the reader deletes them but it takes some driving to get them totally out. i've never heard of that one.
Sorry, I'm not up to parr on the odbII systems, but it sounds like you still need that o2 sensor.
It does seem 'fishy' about that 200 miles... I only drive about 50 miles a week now so he's implying that if I failed and fixed it that day; it might take me a month to clear the code??? Somehow I doubt that.
Makes me glad I've got a 94.
