Hi I have a 1987 f150, yesterday we had some bad weather and it was really heavy snow with lots of slush on the road. I parked my truck last night and let it sit. This morning I went to go start it up and it just wouldn't fire, it was trying to crank over but it just wouldn't start, I was wondering if all that cold slush and water and snow could have messed up the points in my distributor, or if you guys have any other ideas on what might be wrong.
Your truck EFI so there is no points ignition system, the most likely cause of your problem is moisture in high voltage ignition parts like the coil and plug wires. To test for this get a hair dryer and blast the coil until it looks dry and is warm to the touch and then try to start the motor, if it fires you're good for now but it would be a good idea to install a new coil asap since this proves that the existing coil is no longer sealed and any moisture exposure will cause a repeat of the problem.
The truck fired up yesterday after cleaning the center coil, it was about 45 degrees out so it was pretty nice but this morning when I went to start it it wouldn't fire, could it be that there is moisture on the coil or in the wire and in the morning the moisture in there is freezing so it's not firing?
Spray some WD 40 on the plug wires .Pull Distributor cap spray inside of cap and outside of distributor cap .If It starts up ok Then I'd put a new set of plug wires and a new distributor cap and rotor.
Runs good now, when it was warm out I wiped down the coils and put a drop of oil on them to keep the moisture out and it fired right up in the morning! Thanks for the advice guys it really helped!
