Take the ignition module out and to the store and have them check it. It's mounted on the inner fender unless you have the TFI setup. If you have the TFI, it will be mounted on the side of the dist, and you can still take the module off and have it tested.

On all ignitions, be they points all the way up to the most fancy ignitions, you can put the testlight ground on the engine block, and put the probe on the NEGATIVE of the coil, and when you crank the engine, the testlight should blink. The ignition system's job is to ground and unground the negative of the coil to make the coil fire. You will have 12v + on the positive coil wire any time the key is in run or start.

It's held on by some screws, usually torx but sometimes phillips. after you get the screws out you need to unplug it from the dizzy. When you reinstall it, make sure you use thermal paste between it and the distributer, NOT dielectric grease or it will overheat and die.

The bolts are 5.5mm, and take a special socket.

Did you notice any issues with your pickup dieing when it got hot? It could be your module giving up the ghost intermittently.

Pull the dist cap off, and make sure the guts of the distributor are turning when you crank the engine.
