I have a98 Explorer Sport 2wd 4.0 Sohc. It has 132,000 miles on it. It is idling rough when in park or gear after warmed up. It feels sluggish at part throttle but runs great if you floor it. When first started cold it revs really high then settles back down to around 700-800 in park 600 ingear. I have changed plugs and wires, air filter, fuel filter, cleaned IAC and MAF, checked PCV. No codes or lights. Looking for suggestions not sure where to go from here. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Did this issue start since you changed the plugs and wires, or is this the reason you changed them? Have you checked for vacuum leaks? Have you confirmed that there are no cracks in the air intake tube between the MAF sensor and the throttle body? Have you confirmed that the tube is properly installed at both ends?
I bought it in november last year. I changed and cleaned everything just because i didnt know if previous owner ever did. Now that i think about it truck didnt do this till after. I will recheck intake tube tomorrow. I checked for vaccum leaks not very in depth though just checked hoaes and connections.
Since you recall this started since replacing the plugs and wires, while you're back under the hood also carefully check the spark plug wires. I'd suggest pulling them off one at a time, then reseating each, making sure you hear and feel the detent. If you didn't install dielectric compound originally, I suggest you install it this time.
You could also use a scan tool to check for pending codes. Maybe there will be a pending misfire code that will give you an area to focus on. If there's a pending misfire code, or there's a code for a lean or rich bank, and only one bank, that likely would rule out something common to both cylinder banks (such as intake tubing, throttle body, MAF sensor, etc).
