Keyless entry problems

My keyless entry sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. When I got the truck a few months ago, it didn't have a remote, the dealer had an extra one laying around and gave it to me and programed it. I ordered two more off of ebay and programed them and they all worked. then a few days later the ones from ebay quit working, reprogramed and worked but the original didn't.

This went on and on and I quit using the ones from ebay, the original quits from time to time and if I actuate the locks from the switch on the door it'll start working. I've tried this with the ones from ebay and it doesn't work.

Is there something I can check to get these working all the time? The ones from ebay say Ford on the back.

My keyless quit working. Nothing to do with remotes, my actuators have crapped out. It was real intermittent before they totally went. Maybe you have the same problem?

I didn't know they even made them without the keypad. I was asking because mine didn't work on and off for two years when I was parked in my driveway but the keypad always worked. I assume it was another car was on a close enough frequency to mess mine up.

I have found with mine that they all need to be programmed at the same time. If I only do one then the others are dead. So just sit down with all of them with fresh batts and program them at the same time. You should be good if the rest of the system is fine.

Each remote gives off its own frequency. When you do the programming procedure, you're actually telling the truck which frequencies to memorize. It will only remember those frequencies that are programmed at the same time, any previous frequencies will be forgotten.

Just tried the two I have here at home and they worked without reprograming, my wife has one with her. I guess my problem is sometimes they work and sometimes not.
Is there some kind of relay or something I can check to see if its going bad?

Also can i add the keypad to my door? does anyone know if the wiring is in there for it?

2002?... that would be the VSM I believe. That's the vehicle security module. They are known to cause all sorts of issues if they get wet, and since the windshields are known to leak, there is a good possibility that the VSM could be malfunctioning. The issue is determining if it really is an issue with the truck or an issue with the remotes. I'd say if multiple remotes fail to unlock the truck at the same time, but both work at a later time, the issue is with the VSM.

As far as the keypad, I have no idea. I was in my driver door panel a while back to replace the glass after some kids broke in, and I didn't notice any empty plugs or terminated wiring around the handle, but I wasn't looking either.

Usually problems with the VSM consist of the dome light staying on when the doors are closed, the radio staying on when the doors are opened and the key off, or the radio not coming on when the key is on. I believe it also controls the wipers (keeps power once the ignition is off so they complete the cycle). I think seat belt alarms and illumination are through the VSM, as well as door locks and keyless entry. Oh and it keeps power to the windows as well until the door is opened.

Not sure if that's the right direction, but I'm pretty sure that's what receives the signal from the remotes.

Thanks, tried to send reps but said had to spread it around.

Seems like everything else is working, Tried my wifes remote today and it didn't work, so I tried mine, it did work, then tried my wifes and then it worked? It may be something I'm gonna have to live with for a while till it strts acting up more.

Does anyony know if there is a limit on how many remotes are programed? Is three to many? Maybe thats part of the problem if it's supposed to have only 2 programed?

I'm not 100%, but I believe it's either 3 or 4. It should say in the owners manual.
