I was at a sanctioned ford site last night and read sonmething very disturbing. It said the new 4R75 tranny was "sealed" and "filled with lifetime transmission fluid".
You'd think these engineers would've learned by now. I've always heard Ford has a "Better Idea". Well this ain't such a hot idea IMO. It has nothing to do with dirt and everthing to do with HEAT. Thta's why the tranny needs service from time to time.
I'm wondering what to get next and this has caught my attention to. I mean when a truck starts shifting funny, first thing they wanna do is service the trans. What about a trans cooler? So I guess no filter or anything. And this stuff is suppose to last 100K plus miles a gas truck usually has on it. I'll have to see it to believe it.
I am quite sure that the New F-150 will not hold up under work conditions. The people who have driven F-150's for years will probably have to step up to the F-250 Super Duty to accomplish their truck needs.
That is in my honest opinion.
I have seen Construction F-150's go through hell in Washington D.C area traffic , Ibet they generated a whole lot of heat in the slush box.
When you get down and figure it out our trucks don't last very long at all. 100,000 miles at an average of 30 mph is only 3333 hrs. Consider that piece of industrial equipment sitting in a factory running 24/7 is 8760 hours per year, working a single shift 5 days is 2080 hours. For all of the constant fluid changes, lubrication, and TLC we give them our trucks don't hold up very well and wear out quickly. Some industrial equipment has sealed reservoirs that run 24/7 for years without attention. Of course they are rated and applied conservatively so you can get that type of service out of them.
Torque1st...that is a very interesting observation. I doubt the people who will be putting down $35,000 for a new F-150 4x4 think about things that way. You got me thinking...it's absolutely nuts how much profit these companies are making on their trucks despite how little time they actually last.
I know for a fact that there will be no greasable fittings, Like tie rods and u-joints by 2005. The EPA is really clamping down on things like that. I really dont understand all that. They dont want people to change fluids(preventitive maintance) But when it wears out and you need a new one. The cost and materials to make a new part probably cause more pollution than greasing a joint or flushing a tranny.
You are right. Instead of taking care of the one we put on the truck...we'll just make lots more to replace it with! That makes ZERO sense....but then again lots of things in the U.S. are going that way these days. I don't think anyone in D.C. has any common sense at all. It will almost make me feel guilty to have children.
Amen to all of ya. Modern technology (comuters mainly) have allowed industries to walk a razor's edge between max. profit and costly failure. Sometimes they go to far and get cut. Back in the day, engineers overbuilt for longevity and safety. Then there is the service life issue. The big 3 doesn't want vehicles to last 200,000-300,000 miles. The faster they wear out (to a point), the sooner you have to buy another one. Putting cash in their pockets. Government B.S. is getting in the way. Piston engines have been obsolete for a long time.
I too read the same thing. Went and bought an 03 S'Crew. I just don't believe any truck required to haul heavy equipment or tow can handle this without routine maintenance !
I think Ford will have to re-think this after they start losing business.
But, then again they rolled out the 6.0L diesel. Ask those lucky owners what they think of Ford's engineering and QC.
BMW did the same thing years ago with relatively light passenger cars that do not tow. The tranny only lasts 100,000 miles, if that, behind an engine that goes 300,000.
Ford has not done that well with light truck automatics in the recent past anyway. Why further risk your reputation?
Ford hasn't been making good (intelligent) decisions for a while. This is just another chapter. Looks like the glass stomachs are coming in handy. Stop the insanity.
