Is that a new rebuild? you should have replaced the rocker arms if it is.

Sluggish trying to start is a timing issue. It looks like its getting some oil up there. Was your gauge hooked up correctly?

Hi Guys. I didn't want anyone to think that I didn't appreciate the help. I have just been swamped with more than I have hours for. I tried again to prime the oil pump correctly. It would not prime at all. I decided that I would just pull the oil pan and take the oil pump off and inspect it. I have the oil pan loose, but not slid out as of yet. I need to jack the engine up about one more inch to be able to slide it out. The gasket stayed nice and firm to the block, so I think it will be okay with not replacing it. Since that is the biggest headache that I was dreading, it might not go so poorly. Anyway, just an update. Take care all.

Just to check...

You were turning the primer shaft in the same rotation direction as the dist turns?

Double check to make sure you have clearance between the bottom of the pickup screen and the oil pan? I don't recall what minimum clearance is.

Glad you got fire. Oil pressure will be even better!

.

Thank you everyone for the help and suggestions. I jacked the engine up and dropped the oil pan. The oil pump shaft had slipped out of the hole and was resting on top of the oil pump so it looked more or less as it should from the top. The oil pan gasket stayed sealed to the block and wasn't damaged, so that was a true blessing. I got everything bolted back up and I should be able to try and crank it again tomorrow after I verify pressure. Thanks again for the help.

Cheap is good Mike, especially at this point in the game! Let me add, it is as loud as the airport with that beast running straight headers, even if it were for just a few seconds. Maybe I should drive it past the HOA President's house about 3:00 am. HaHa

A cheap water pressure gauge from a well pump will work .With a drill spinning the distributor shaft you should be able to get 65 psi on your gauge

Okay, another major step into proving how ignorant I am. I dropped the oil pan, fixed the oil pump shaft and got everything bolted back up. I started up the drill and oil started gushing from a hole directly behind the fuel pump. I know (think) it is a galley plug, but could someone tell me what size the hole and threads are? I THINK this is all I need before I can hear Pop's Truck rumbling again. At least the oil pump works now, right? haha

Is it this hole? I think it's going to be 1/8" NPT pipe thread.

Wait to thank me, I'm guessing at the size.
Seriously, no thanks necessary.

Isn't that hole behind the fuel pump where the oil pressure sending unit goes?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with reusing rocker arms as long as they have been inspected, not worn out, cleaned, and assembled correctly.

If that is a 385 series engine you turn the oil pump counter clockwise to prime. Do it for a few minutes and have a helper verify your gauge reads pressure by turning key on.

You can also turn the crank manually (clockwise) about a 1/2 turn a few times to help the oil get everywhere. The problem with that is keeping track of #1 tdc to get the distributor back in correctly. Prime the carb and make sure you get a pump shot inside the carb when the throttle is depressed.

I recently made the mistake of breaking my cam in with open exhaust and I let it run too long before I could hear the ticking noise and ruined all my bearings and oil pump. Not sure yet what I did wrong but wiped 3 lobes and lifters. So far I have determined I did everything right. I will be reassembling in a few weeks.

I hate to hear about your cam. It stinks to be so careful and try to do everything correctly only to find out something was forgotten. I wish you well on the fix. Also, I wasn't worried about the rockers either. I truly appreciate all the help that I get on here and could use even more, but I had my heads professionally worked and I feel confident that they will be okay. That being said, if anyone ever sees something that looks amiss, let me know, I'm not tired or proud (to quote Arlo Guthrie). I have near no experience and Pop's Truck is pretty much my first time working on a truck, or car, for that matter.
