Yes, a clogged air filter or insufficient capacity of the intake to move air ( read throttle plate ) creates a pressure differential between atmospheric pressure and the intake manifold. Lower "pressure" in the intake manifold in a diesel = no bueno

[QUOTE=Tugly;13088578]That fits with what I was thinking. An external boost gauge is free from the bondage of the rules of the Ford MAP sensor. The turbo blows air at idle, but I don't know if it's as much as the engine sucks. A restricted air filter could further reduce the turbo's ability to supply air so low on the turbo's operation envelope.[/QUOTE)

I installed a new 6673 filter about 3 months ago about 2,000 miles. I'm using one Pete's covers. Could this cover be causing the restriction? I guess I should remove it and see if the readings change. Should I then drill and tap the spider to get my reading for boost there?

I am thinking of taking this one step further and removing my air filter see if the reading changes. I have a good feeling it won't and the negative reading is more likely to follow Cody's explanation of how the calculation is made.

I can't disagree with this, as I'm spit-balling here.

koski19 - that cover idea would be a good test. As for the installation of the boost sensor on the spider - that is ideal when tuning and modding. When you up the performance, you can eventually crowd the limits of the turbo and you want to know when you're there. Stock turbo and sticks (sensor on spider):

I'll try that tomorrow and then drill and tap the spider. I need to remove the turbo for pedestal leak. I'm unable to post photos..not allowed to. Thanks for your help.

I took a couple of videos of my Aeroforce Interceptor gauge while reading the boost at idle, with and without the air filter in place.

I have the AFE Stage 2 Filter with Pete's Cover (in my signature). No real difference at all between the two.
