What Part Is This?

Hi, I'm trying to identify this part inside the engine bay. The hoses are crumbling apart and I would like to replace them.

The red hose is coming down from the air-filter assembly. One black hose goes up into the carburator, the other sneaks back behind the engine. There is a black **** on the top, almost looks like a hand pump.

1977 F100 351M

Thanks guys and gals

To give you reference, i'm standing infront of the truck near the passenger side headlight, this unit is front-left of engine.

Thanks,

Justin

That's the charcoal canister for the evaporative emissions system.

2x.. the charcoal absorbs whatever fumes escape/evaporate (like from the gas tank) and is evacuated from the caniser by a low vacuum signal from the air cleaner, into the carb, and introduced into the combustion cycle.

Wow, never knew of such a thing. Thanks for the help.

Do newer cars have these? Is it vital to the smooth running of my truck? Would there even be any charcoal left?

Newer cars have slightly different systems

You can take it out. Hell, if you don't have to get your truck smogged, pull it all out.

It has nothing to do with how the truck runs. It's to prevent the fuel tank from venting to the atmosphere.

They were intended to reduce the emission/release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
