Help Identifying Part and Purpose

Warning: Dirty engine bay needing of TLC.

For the life of me I can not figure out what this is and what its purpose is. It has a hose that has either been cut or just fallen apart over the years. If you could help me understand what this does and where to route the hose to that would be great.

I will be doing a through cleaning of this engine bay once we get some above freezing temps.

Thanks,
Trever T.

I appreciate the quick help. That completely answers the question.

What is the consensus on these?
Do most keep them in service or remove them?
Does the charcoal interior need to be replaced?

The evaporative emissions charcoal canister is supposed to capture gas fumes from the fuel tank. A foil hose (yours is broken/missing) connects to the intake evacuates the fumes and introduces those fumes to the air cleaner for combustion.

It doesn't require replacement unless the charcoal, for whatever reason, is submerged in fuel.

Leave it for emissions compliance (if subject to visual and emissions testing) or delete the entire system. Remember to replace the gas cap with a non-Evap cap.

What years did they use this? My 70 F350 does not have one. Or did the bigger trucks not have them?

'Not sure whether weight ratings were a factor... My San Jose-built, Utah-DSO F-100 doesn't have it. I figure geography had more to do with it.

Thanks again for all the help guys.

This 1970 F100 was a Norfolk, VA Built and sold in the Charlotte DSO. Not sure there were any strict emissions requirements for this area back then.

Not counting Econolines, it was F100 only. Starting in 1970.

Changing the tank to a non-evap tank involves swapping the filler neck, also.
Vented cap will not fit on a non-vented filler neck and vice-versa.

What kind of hose do you think would be a sufficient replacement?

"Sufficient replacement"? We prefer "acceptable substitute".

Try your local NAPA shop and have them look up #BK825-4025.... 3/4" X 36" preheater hose/tube.
