So I went to the garage tonight to put the bike away and was standing there looking at this console just thinking when my son came out. He loves it but I told him how disappointed I was with the blue.
I explained to him how I was going to have to tape it all up for painting. He said "well, can you just peel back the carpet so you don't need to tape?"
He gets some crazy ideas sometimes (serious imagination) but I started thinking about this one. I tried an inconspicuous place to try it and was able to pull it back. There are some spots that were VERY difficult and took some time and patience and other spots that came up easier (none of it was easy).
I think I should be able to respray the adhesive to reattach the carpet after I paint the gray.
The nice thing is that I still have one out; if this doesn't work, I can still carpet the center!!
Had to leave work early for an appointment so after that was done i stopped and found some gray paint at the auto parts store. I also stopped by a local car stereo install shop and got some carpet as well.
This leaves me with two options to finish; paint center and, if unhappy with those results, carpet the center.
So while the gray is darker than what I planned, I am SO much happier with this color than the blue!!! It's a HUGE improvement!!
At the hardware store this past week I saw some black "runner" material. something you might put down on a staircase. It was ribbed which I thought might look kinda cool. Where would I find more info on the vinyl?
While it will be staying gray for now, I am not ruling out something to cover where I painted.

Comes in all colors and textures.
just throwing it out there. Its good to look at all options.
Nice, haha!! Well it seemed that you may have already had information seeing that you posted pics of the material. Plus, since I had already googled it and seemed to get more information on graphic sign material than anything related to car interiors...
However...I did not include "textured" in my query, so maybe I will try again!! I did get to watch a guy put a vinyl nacelle on his model RC jet... Exciting stuff!!
This morning I took and reglued the carpet down where I had peeled it back. I am MUCH happier with the color. Finding a gray to match proved to be about impossible so I would have to try to find the trucks' color codes for the dash if I really wanted an exact match.
Funny, I was completely comfortable making this design, cutting and fitting all that wood, assembly, etc. I was really out of my element with the carpet but I tried it anyway. It is not a professional quality job but considering the audio shop said it would be difficult with all those angles, I'm happy with the results.
I still need to do a lot around the electronics, but the CB fits and today I tried to mount it to the roof.
this marks the first time this has been screwed into poistion!!!
Thanks, guys, that blue had me "blue" but the gray looks much cleaner!
I will be mounting the CB and, I think I will need to add those thread "clips" where the screws mount. I would think it would only take a few times of the screw being put in and out before the hole in the sheet metal would begin to open up and get loose.
In order to do that, however, I will need two holes in the ceiling per screw; one where the screw itself enters and one to slide the clip into. These kinds of clips are already in the truck; the sun visor mount clip, for example.
That means opening a few holes in the headliners. I do think that is a far superior solution than the current method of screwing directly into the sheet metal beam.
Time to give some credit where it is due! My kids got me this CB for father's day last year. It's a Cobra 29LX and it's a great radio. Since I didn't have this console, I never permanently installed the radio in the truck. We use it when we travel and it has proved to be an invaluable tool!!
So I kept the original box and it had the mount and mic clip along with the screws inside of the box. When I was building this console I made several attempts to find that box and couldn't. It was frustrating.
I finally conceded and emailed Cobra and asked them to quote me a price to ship me the new bracket and clip. They asked for my address and which model I had. A few days went by and I didn't hear anything from them but then a package arrived with my new clip and bracket!! Sent from Cobra at NO CHARGE!!!
Ok, a bracket, clip and screws isn't a huge amount of cost - even with the shipping - but I was VERY impressed at their customer service!!! This is how customer service should be!!! They didn't balk or ask me for proof of purchase or anything.
Very cool, Cobra Electronics, thank you!!!
Btw, I mounted the bracket into the console. I have no idea how I am going to reach in to attach the one side screw b/c it is way back in the corner. I will be asking my young teenage son to try to reach in and attach it!!!
The weight of the CB also has me thinking of adding two more screws to the console up front. I will need to cut the hold in the headliner so I can see where to transfer those!! In the meantime, however, I have some quads to get ready for riding season!!
