Unhappy Oil Leak ??? :(

I have an oil leak. I have a 1997 Ford f-350 7.3L PSD 142,000. It is hard to see where it is coming from. It is fairly high up on the motor. This has elimated the front and rear seal and Pan gasket I have no other ideas. I might add that i am new to a diesel. Any ideas would be greatly apreciated.

Matt -- 1997 Ford F-350, 7.3L PSD, Crew Cab, Long Bed, Diablo Sport Chip.

Oil Leak ??? :(

I have this same leak in a 2001 PSD. I'm almost sure it is coming from the turbo pedestal. It seems to have not been as bad sense it has gotten hotter here in Texas. So.....I'm sure it is the pedestal!!!!

My '02 had leaks from the turbo since new. It has been back twice for that problem and still leaks.

Oil Leak ??? :(

My Turbo has also been replaced twice!!!!! The other times it was leaking through the turbo and into the intercooler pipes. The dealer replaced the whole turbo and it cured that problem. The second time was a fluke. The replaced it again and it fixed the problem. That was awhile back. This leak I have now is on the outside.....coming down the back of the engine and over the starter. It has to be the "O" rings on the pedestal!!!! There is one on top at the turbo and one on the bottom at the top of the block.......I hope we ALL get them fixed!!!!! Good luck.....

Oil Leak ??? :(

It probably is. This engine has a very deep valley and in order to tell, you need to climb up and shine a good flashlight through the maze of wiring into the valley of the engine. If, (a) your oil leak is trickling off the transmission bellhousing and it kind of looks like it's a rear main and (b) you then see oil puddled in the valley when you do the inspection above, you have a topside leak coming from somewhere. Then the fun begins on tracing the source.....

Oil Leak ??? :(

I had a buddy that replaced a plug?? in the back of the motor that had a bad o-ring. It looked like a rear main leak but was further up. I wish I'd seen him do it but I was busy working on my lift and didn't see exactly where it was. He was told by the guy that sold him the plug that it would crank for a long time before it would start after changing the plug because it loses a bunch of oil out of the plug when you take it out. Also it chugs real bad for 30 sec or so after it did start.

I think it's something to do with the high pressure oil for the injectors or something like that.

I really wish I'd listened when he was talking to my other buddy about it. Mine is leaking down the back of the motor also now and I gotta get up there soon and see what's wrong.

Oil Leak ??? :(

I just heard this from a deisel mech. He said idling will "slop" oil out onto the engine and it pools up and looks like a leak. Make sure you are not idling...maybe the guy that had the truck before did that.

Just a thought.

When I put on the Banks power elbow the butterfly valve was removed allowing the pushrod activator to float free. Eventually the pushrod blew out the seal that holds it in and is leaking oil right down the back and looks just like a rear main leak. Of course the dealer told me to stuff it.

I would be VERY interested in finding out under what conditions idling an engine will "slop" oil out, but revving it wouldn't. I have idled a lot of diesels often, two of which are powestrokes, and no oil is slopped on the engine anywhere.

Oil leaks at the top of an engine can collect anywhere on the way down, and seem to emanate from the lower position.

Oil Leak ??? :(

hey theo ...
I believe the guy is trying to describe turbo "slobber". That usually happens when the exhaust gets too cool during long idle periods and the fuel mixes with exhaust soot, runs out the turbo clamp area and runs down the pipes. WHO would want to put their pretty little mits in that crap??

I have never experienced that either, but I raise the revs when I idle for a long time. It sounds disgusting
