I have resently bought a 2006 F250 supercab 4x4 powerstroke. I have never owned a diesel before. I bought the truck so I could tow my travel trailer. I sold my 2001 F150 supercab that had 310000 miles on it. So I am sold on Ford. I had heard bad stories about the 6.0 engine but those are all you ever hear never the good stories. I found the truck and it had 160000 miles on it and the car fax had a ton of service records for it. It didn't have any major components changed on it according to the car fax. I test drove it for about 30 miles. Got it on the highway and in town and no issues. Purchased the vehicle and got it down the highway about 20 miles and the engine light came on. Noticed a little jerking when shifting to a higher gear. Not major jerking just a little different than before. I couldn't call the dealer at the time due to the fact they had closed when I left that evening. I bought the truck in Dallas and I live 300 miles away from there. So I did stop at autozone and they ran a scanner on it and it showed 3 trouble codes. I had no choice but to drive it home and on the way I stopped at a stop sign and the thing wouldnt go. It was jerking really bad and smoking and so I pulled over and turned it off. I sat for a few minutes and then got it going again with no problems.
Long story short my mechanic looked at it and he changed an injector, a ficm, and the egr valve. The dealer did pay half of the cost of repairs and it was an as is sale.
I have been driving it for about 10 days as a my daily driver and now every once in a while it will have white smoke on start up and till it warms up. I can drive it about 2 miles and it will stop smoking.
EGR cooler failure is where I would start. You need to get something to check the temperature delta's between the oil and coolant. Anything over 15* warrants an oil cooler change according to OEM. If it IS the EGR cooler and you drive it too long you run the risk of hydrolocking your motor and bending a rod. Keep a CLOSE eye on your coolant level to see if you're using coolant.
I would keep an eye on your oil level... Pull the exhaust down pipe off of the turbo and look for an oil swirl and caked on oil. Check your tail pipe and look for raw oil.... My bet is a leaking oil turbo seal.
