Multiple Problems 06 F350

This is my first post on FTE, and it comes with bad new unfortunately. Anyway...Here it is. After having my truck for 4 years it's finally starting to have lots and lots of problems. It's a 2006 F350, 6.0 V8 turbo diesel. After being towed in 4 times and not having anyone be able to fix it, I'm kinda annoyed I can't get this fixed. The first time I had noticed excess amounts of brown/black smoke from the tailpipe whenever I would accelerate. Well, one day I started her up, backed out of the garage, and went to step on the gas, and it choked itself and released ungodly amounts of white smoke. I had to get it towed in to Jones West Ford in Reno NV. They told me it was an EGR Cooler issue. Fixed it a couple days later, next week, happened again. Same issue. Then, about a week and a half after this was fixed, I was driving it, and it was losing power as I was coming back from a meeting. I was barely able to get it back to my house. This was it's third tow in. They told me there was excess carbon build up in the engine. They cleaned it out and said "drive it like you stole it for the next couple weeks. This will clear the rest of this crap out of the engine." Well, few days later, I was driving it back from Reno, and it was smoking v ery badly (brown/black). I stopped at a friends house to pick up some signs he was making for me, and it had trouble starting up in his driveway. Drove it about 20 miles down the road, and I took my exit to start driving towards home, and at the bottom of the exit ramp, the temperature gauge jumped up from normal to way over the red warning point. It started putting out the most white smoke I've ever seen, and I was forced to pull over and get towed in again. So that was my fourth and most recent tow (last week) and I'm looking for some help. After this most recent tow, they said it was an EGR cooler again. Now, I have it back, and it's having another problem. Still having some brown and black smoke, and when I accelerate it...I'm not sure the word for it. Lets say the RPM was up at just above 2000, about 3/4 the way to the first mark after 2000. It will go up and down between 2.1 and 2 on the RPM gauge.
You can hear it in the engine as well. Is this a fowl spark plug or a turbo problem? Any help would be appreciated. I have to take it back in tomorrow morning due to the fact I can't afford any more tow-ins. I've used my 4 free ones. Anyway, if anyone has any idea, I would be more than happy to read them. Thanks guys,

-Wyatt

Driving these engine's easy is a NO NO,,,they need to work,,rev,,excersise the turbo,,keep the crap blown out.

I have 150k miles on mine, and it's been great, no problems until these. As for how I drive it, it is definitely not babied, it has towed a 15k pound fifth wheel from California to Florida, up the east coast, back through north/south Dakota, and from Colorado up to the whole western side of Canada, down in to Oregon, Washington etc. Now I don't do much towing, but I don't go easy on it. I drive about 400 miles a week, 95% of those highway miles. It's been the best truck other than my grand dads '79 Ford which unfortunately got totaled. Anyway, bare point, it's driven pretty hard.

When the EGR cooler was replaced did they also replace the oil cooler? If not that's most likely the reason for the repeat failure. The coolant side of the oil cooler can get restricted from particulates in the coolant. Since the EGR cooler is downstream of the oil cooler it's coolant flow is also restricted and what little coolant is in there will flash boil creating steam, which is hot enough to damage the EGR cooler.

I'd say your smoke/power issues have to do with the EGR valve itself.

Here's a link to the 6.0 tech folder:https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/3...ch-folder.html You'll find a thread in there that will show you how to remove the EGR valve and clean it

I believe they did replace the EGR valve as well as the cooler itself. However, I will look at that link and see if it needs to be cleaned, that sounds like a good idea. Would you suggest disconnecting it totally instead of just cleaning?

Once again, did they change the oil cooler as Steve asked. That very well could be the root of the problem.

It will need to be cleaned before you decide on it's connection fate. There is a lot of info here about the oil cooler/egr cooler failures. More than you could read in a week. I am, however, wondering about your dealer

That is another one I'm not sure of. It does make sense to look at that though. I think I'll read through these tech files a little more and see what I can find. If it is a simple oil filter issue, I'd be pretty happy.

I said oil cooler not oil filter. Huge difference.

Yes Huge difference. The oil cooler is actually the coolant filter

I can appreciate your humor but if the guy is confused this didn't help him.

Oops, sorry, just woke up when I read/replied there. I did mean to put oil cooler in there. Anyway, I don't believe they've replaced that. I'm trying to decide if I want to take the hour and a half drive back to the dealer to get the problems looked at, or if I can fix it myself. I don't have as much knowledge in cars/trucks as I would like, but my father does, so maybe I can get some help from him. And as for " a simple fix", I don't even know where that came from. I know not much is an easy fix in these engines.

Basically the top of the motor has to come off to get to the oil cooler and while there replace the egr cooler once again. They, IMO, should always be changed as a pair because of the labor to get to them.

Wyatt if I were you I'd be having a little talk with Jones West Ford. I've seen a Technical Service Bulletin (issued by Ford) posted by one of the techs on this site that states oil cooler replacement is a part of that procedure. Hopefully someone has that TSB # so you can have a little ammo on your side when you speak to them.
