bye-bye hd egr?

i have an 88 f250 hd version with a 351. part of the egr system, which injects air into each cylinders exhaust port at various times, has developed an exhaust leak. rather than fix the piping i am being urged by friends and mechanics alike to eliminate the whole system including air pump. i have gutted the cat as we don't have emissions testing here and most likely won't for many years. i realize it sucks power to drive the air pump but am hesitant to rip out the whole thing. i like keeping the original- complete - look of the engine / engine compartment. any comments?

I had a 90 HD F250 4x4 that I removed all of the "extras" from including EGR, CAT, pump, all the fruit cans and everything. Also added headers. It did fine, but had a little rough idle from then on.
Seemed to run out a good deal better. Someone with more experience could probably have solved that.

I have also disabled the "Thermactor" system by taking out some of the plumbing just so I could make room for my Jacobs ignition box and felt I didn't need the system anyway. I still have the air pump installed because I don't know what to do about the drive belt, which leads to the question "Will the belt tensioner make up for the extra slack left by the missing pump or do I need a shorter belt"?
It does leave a code now but at least I know why and I have'nt had any other drivability problems because of it.

BTW: It would be wise to keep all original parts just in case

You would need a shorter belt. I removed the entire system except for EGR on my 1989 F-150 302. I noticed a bit higher than oem idle and the "check engine" light comes on during WOT, but it's better in the long run.
