New Billet Wheel, P1249 Codes, Map Sensor

So I just ordered my new 6/6 Billet Compressor wheel from RR but I am wondering how the higher boost levels are going to effect my truck and wonder if I need to install a Overboost regulator. The reason I ask is with my stock truck with only the waste gate rod adjusted tighter, I was getting random P1249 codes. I would get them at different boost levels on my boost gauge which was the odd part. Sometimes the gauge would be around 15 on a normal take off and it would through a code. Other times I would run at 20 for an extended period of time and never through a code. Could I have a bad MAP sensor maybe since my light was coming on at lower boost levels and I am seeing the P1249 code? Also since this new wheel puts out higher boost numbers, is it just going to make my issue worse?

Thanks for any advise,

i dont think you will see higher boost levels until you add a tuner. i think the extra boost seen when changing the turbo wheel coinsides with the tuner allowing more fuel and tweaking the engine timing.
i could be wrong, but when i installed my W/W and other engine mods before the DP tuner i didnt see more boost.

<TABLE border=0 cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="80%" align=center><TBODY><TR style="HEIGHT: 12.75pt" height=17><TD style="HEIGHT: 12.75pt" height=17>P1249</TD><TD>Wastegate Fail Steady State Test</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
this is what your code is refering to, not sure what it means exactly
but it might be not seating properly. or the line going to your wastegate actuator might
be leaking or blocked or something.. i think others will chime in with the right answer for you

That is the official description of the code but most people refer to it as an overboost code from what I have read. I never saw this happening until I adjusted my wastegate rod and did see my peak boost numbers go up slightly. It is like the truck is seeing more boost than it wants at a set engine speed since I get the light and code at various boost numbers. It just happens every once in awhile. They say the new billet wheels will increase the boost numbers even on a stock truck. The same drive pressure equals more boost and CFM flow with the new more efficient wheel. That is why I am asking about all this. Time will tell for sure but I am wondering what everyone thinks.

Sounds like the MAP sensor might be seeing higher boost than it expects and is setting the code. A regulator might cure it. The product description for strictly diesel's regulator give additional info: Driven Diesel Overboost Annihilator

FYI, I bought the RR non-adjustable regulator and was still getting P0238. Ended up purchasing the adjustable regulator linked above and after adjusting pressure down two notches no longer got the code. Dennis at SD said that some trucks just need slightly lower pressure setting and that is why he went back to adjustable regulators from fixed regulators. I tried another MAP sensor which yielded the same results prior to purchasing a second regulator.

for the price of RR boost fooler you should get one added to the order if these new wheels give a bit more boost to stock engines then you shouldnt have a prob.
from memory before i fitted my boost fooler, i would get the overboost code only when i gave it mongrel or loaded it up and powered up a hill, then it would trip the code.. yours might be a totally different problem as you say it can do it at any boost pressure..
not sure.

just thinking also, wouldnt giveing a engine more boost without extra fuel to add to the more air make it run lean or can the stock computer adjust and give a little more fuel without the need for tunning..

The OCR's are one needed with certain tuner's tunes. My previous tunes required me to have one and my new ones no longer require it so I'm getting ready to sell it. If your running stock tunes you will get a code at 23psi I believe. At that point the MAP sensor will stop sending fuel to the engine. So if you are stock and putting a new wheel in you will definitely need one to stop getting the SES light.

Well I ordered the Driven Diesel Overboost Annihilator today. RR was out of stock and I like that this one can be adjusted if needed. Still not sure why it decides to kick the light on and throw a code on moderate take offs but not do it when pulling and running up around 20 psi. I mainly use this truck to pull around 17K of trailer so I spend a good amount of time at higher boost levels.

I also got my Turbo from UPS today! It looks really nice and it feels brand new. I have heard about some rebuilds that have play in them but this one is tight and smooth. It is too early for a complete review but so far, it looks like he does really good work. Also has great prices too. Barder Turbo Service
