I have a f350 460 std trans 4x4 and have never gotten over 3.5 miles per gallon. Can't seem to get more. It is used as a farm feed truck because I can't afford to drive it any further. Any suggetions to improve mileage. 8 MPH would be wonderful.

^Tune the engine up, check the timing, but keep in mind that these engines just are hogs.

I don't know how you drive, but generally, accelerating slowly can give you up to 5% more fuel economy, versus ramming the accelerator.

Is it EFI or carbureted? If you are only using it for short hops around the farm you can't expect too much, but it sounds like something is not right. I have a 96 F250 SCLB EFI 460 5-spd. with 150,000 mi, and 18/39 tires and I get about 11-12 on the highway.

I would hold out for a 3.55 gear ratio auto if you can find one I know they are out there but are few and far between. That's just my 2 cents.
I have a 1966 F250 with a 1974 460 engine. It has a carb spacer for more cold air intake, Hedman headers, and 3.54 gears in rear. Gets about 11 MPG on hwy unloaded and around 8 MPG loaded. Strong pulling engine. Wish I could get 3.07 gears in rear. Engine has not even tapped its pulling potential. Pulls 10,000 lbs of hay regularly with no issues.

Back to life Just picked up a 96 F350 CC 4x4 on 35's. Filled up and drove home 100+ miles refilled and got 7.8 mpg driving freeway speeds at 75 with the cruse. Ran great but a tune up is in order and and we will see if we can't get closer to the 11 range. LOL

You Can get better Fuel Mileage on 460!

I bought a very low mileage 460 to back up a 375,000 mile 97 250 PowerStroke. I needed more pulling power and I knew I could get better fuel mileage than the stock EFI setup. I've only spent about 500.00 on economy Mods and tuning. My 1991 is an E4OD and has 3.55 Diffs. I'm running 265/75/16 E on/off road tires.

When I first got the truck I was getting 4.6 local driving, 6.0 trailer towing, and 10.5 highway. My over all average was 7.5 MPG

Now I'm averaging 9.0 for local driving I can tow my cattle trailer at 10 MPG and for highway driving I'm averaging 11.7 MPG. My highest mileage has been 12.7 MPG loaded with 2,200 pounds in the bed.

I drove it to a nearby city today and picked up few things for the farm I filled I averaged 11.85 MPG running 65 MPH on cruise at 60 degree temp. with a mild headwind.

Today Regular gas was 2.89 and diesel fuel was 3.85. So my cost per mile for fuel was .244. That's the same cost as getting 15.8 MPG on diesel. My 97 Powerstroke averages about 15.2 on the highway (Both Trucks are SC LB E4OD 4x4s) So the 460 wins on fuel cost per mile and money savings on maintaining the 460 verses the Diesel makes it much cheaper to run at these fuel prices.

Mind as well throw my 2 cents in here. Just got back from a 250 mile round camping trip with just bikes and normal camping gear in the back (maybe 900lbs) and I got about 7-8MPG. Unloaded I usually get 9-10ish going downhill. 1992 F-350 CCLB 4X4 460 Auto w/ 4.10's and 35" tires.

Thanks for your detailed info Hillbillyfarmer57. I was shopping for an older diesel for towing, hauling and snow plowing until I came across one heck of a deal (STEAL!!). Neighbor had a '96 F250 SC 4X4 7.5L, C6 trans, 4.10's, HD susp, tow package and a Western 7' 6" plow. The odometer read 58960 miles when I picked it up.

Local hauling and towing (trailer is about 4000lb loaded) I've been getting about 6.7 MPG. When I first got it I drove it a few days REAL easy and got 8.1 MPG. I had also forgotten the POWER on tap with a 460!! I spent about 1/4 the money I was looking at for a diesel with ALOT more miles on it so I figure I can afford to put alot of gas in it. But thank God it is NOT my daily driver.

It has changed my mind on the 7.5L.

I love this ol truck

Todd

Can't beat a 460 in towing. They are indestructible (almost).

Banksy rules

I just switched to a 460 after owning a 7.3idi for twelve years. Average fuel economy was 15mpg, bone stock, E4OD, 4;10 rear and stock tire size.Truck never broke down on me(odo 278 000 miles before she got T-boned). But, I have to admit, I love the 460. Very quiet, more power then the old diesel could ever hope for and I get 13mpg, thanks to a Banks power pack(installed by previous owner). Even my eleven year old daughter, who cried when I brought the wounded diesel home, loves the "new"truck. Considering fuel prices here in California (3.99 for diesel, 3.45 for gas) and cheaper maintenance, the 460 wins my heart and wont cost more.

I love hearin'about the 460's.Takes me back to the good ole days when I had my 75 3/4 ton supercab. What a beast of a truck. The 460 had a Holey double pumper, headers, and all that hotrod stuff.I was gettin' 10 no matter what, I could pull a house uphill against the wind and still get 10 MPG.Great old motors!
