dont laugh (460 gas mileage)
mid teens and up is diesel economy territory.
I just picked up a couple weeks ago a 1986 F250 Lariat XLT with a 460ci and a 3speed C6, and so far i have got about 15 to 16 consistently. Those are almost all highway miles but for a carbed 460 its super great, i dont know the rearend gear ratio yet but i thinks it must be 3.55 or close to for this good of mileage
verify your miles driven.it's likely your odo is incorrect.
the 460 and the c6 are both stacked against you.
shoot, the boys here with fuel injected 460's with overdrive trans can't even "peak" that, let alone consistently get it.when some claim they have, the probability of a fill up error is much more likely than actually peaking mid teens (should they track the following tank, they will likely find a 3-6 mpg mileage finding to correct their full up error.) sorry.
Doug.according to a study found here:
http://e85.whipnet.net/e85.price/gallons.html
the average price of gasoline was $1.32 9 years ago adjusted to inflation that is (which means 2002 at this time of post.)
Since we dug this up and are on the topic. I was tickled to get 11.5 mpg with my 3.55 geared F-350 460 4x4, E4OD with 37's on a highway trip. I was MORE THAN happy. There is NO POSSIBLE way to get over 15 consistantly with a EFI 460 and overdrive. NO WAY. The guy who claims 18 is full of it. On average 9-10 is normal in a one ton.
yeah its that good
well i understand people having a hard time believeing that i get about 14 to 16 with a 460 and C6 but i have checked tank after tank and its correct. I had a hard time believeing it too i have been a ford truck guy for my whole life and i always believed you basically get 9 to 10 no matter what with a 460 but, my Odometer is dead on ive checked and i have checked mileage also with map quest. For instance my work is 35 miles from home, i ran the tank down too the point it i almost didnt make it to the gas station then put 5 gallons in and drove to work and back home and 10 miles around town with no problems. Its 2wheel drive and has 225/75/R15's on it. I did have a problem yesterday with it seeming like the carb was running out of gas after driving freeway and surface streets on and off all day so i might have a clog or sludge on my fuel pick up so its not drawing enough fuel but i havent checked anything yet, it currently the smorning, is running great.
my wife consistently gets 14.5-15.2 on my DD, BUT she drives like a wuss, takes 20 seconds to get to 30 mph, her trip is 38 miles 1 way, with 50 mph county road
i get @10, i love messin with the wise a$$es in the hemi's

yeah i would say on the highway i drive like a semi-wuss i take forever to get up to speed and i cruz at 5 over the speed limit which is 55 to 65 the whole way. Ive had lots of practice you see i have a 4runner that i rolled recently in a rock crawling competion in delta utah, it was our second vechile. Anyways it had a 3.0L V6 that most people got 14 to 18 mpgs and i got 20 mpgs with 35's, 4.10's, and a 4 speed 340H tranny, the key is driving style and the willingness to go slow up hills

Man I would be tickled to get 15 mpg, especially with a C6, but come to think of ot, I got 11mpg on my trip but I didnt realize my speedo is likely off with the 37's, I wonder if there is a correction formula I can use. Bigger tires makes the speedo show slower right? so I likely got more MPH than I thought.

Yeah I just looked at a tire calculator, if I was going 60 on the speedo I'd actually be going 65 lol, so I actually travled MORE than my odometer read, meaning I likely did indeed get more towards 12mpg...Am I loosing it? or is that right.

Thats right...I always use GPS for MPGs...My tires are only about an inch taller than stock size about 33's (285/75) and I travel an extra 5 miles per 150 on the OD..
Unloaded I usually get in the neighborhood of 10-12 depending on how I drive... I got 9.2 mpg last week pulling a 4k dump trailer loaded with 10k+ of topsoil (scale said 21,400lbs) @70mph in 3rd gear the whole way and making the truck hold speed up some big grades....Mielage was much better than I anticipated but thats probably because no gas was required going downhill...
Last month I only got 8.6 on a 330 mile trip back from ID pulling much less weight around 4k total and driving slower but into a nasty 30-40mph head wind... Thats about as bad as I've seen on the hwy..
Last Sept I towed my brothers car 1,000 miles back from Seattle on a dolly and got between 11 and 12.3 the whole way....
I will add that when I bought the truck in its sad, stock, state of neglect...The drive home netted me about 8MPG with no load driving very conservative... So I'm very happy with what I get now...
Thanks for digging this thread up.It's exactly what I was looking for. I'm a newby and I have a 91 ext. cab F350 w/460. I was getting 10 mpg any way I drove it, loaded or unloaded. Now I'm getting about 9 mpg and loosing power. So it's either rebuild time or upgrade to a diesel. But I love my truck. It seems like a rebuild and a small amount of mileage difference, if that's the case, would be the way to go. But if there is a 6-7 mpg difference, it might be worth the expense to purchase another truck w/diesel. Thanks again for the info.

Here it is.... all 460 owners should like reading this
FOUR WHEELER Magazine's Project M.P.G. That AND here is a link to the original link in PDF format http://performanceunlimited.com/proj...ine_series.pdf
hey has anyone on here removed the two smog pumps on a carbed 460 with any success? i want to get rid of them but i dont want to do a hack job like most do and just tear it all out. I want to make sure it has no negative effects on the engine and hopfully will give me a little power back. Any help would be appricated
Fuel Line drawings
Thanks for speaking on this subject. I have a 1987 Dually with a 460. The previous owner did several "modifications" that I am fixing and I am trying to find a fuel line diagram as there seems to be parts missing and been uanable to locate one. Thanks.
lol, not till I read this ....
Bump one last time
I did find it odd a guy said he filled up to the tune of 45 bucks ... I wish !
