I'm working on my 1996 in my signature and it needs front shocks. Currently the truck is a 2WD, but I plan to convert it to 4WD within the year and I don't feel like buying 2 sets of shocks during this time. So, I've done some research into my favorite brand and type of shock and this is what I have:
While I find it interesting the 2WD version has more travel, I can see why when you compare the differences in suspension components, mounting, and what-not. I have no plans putting a lift kit on my truck, just a stock 4WD conversion. My main question is this: Since I only want to purchase 1 set of shocks, should I get the 2WD models and use them when I convert to 4WD, or should I purchase the 4WD models?
I might go with the 2WD ones but since the 4WD front axle weight is more the valving might be different. if it were me I'd call Monroe and see what they say. Based on that, you may end up with the 4WD version so you don't have too weak shocks when you convert. And just live with a harsher ride until then.
I doubt the amount of travel is a real factor.
Just for a bit of closure on this thread, I called Monroe today and the rep recommended I go ahead and purchase the 4WD units as they will be just fine until I make the 4WD swap. The difference in length won't hurt it but the difference in valving will once I've completed my 4WD conversion. I also asked the rep if I should consider using the Reflex line instead (or a combination of Reflex and Sensa-Trac) and he fully recommended the Sensa-Tracs for the driving conditions my truck will be under the majority of the time.
I will say I was quite impressed with the level of service I received when I called. It's nice to encounter that when calling for advice.
